The final Flat season of the year at
Musselburgh forms part of the Racing TV coverage on Monday.
It’s an eight-race card with 82 runners with the British EBF Flying Scotsman Conditions Stakes (3.00) and Racing TV Bass Rock Handicap (4.10) sharing top billing.
I’ve got selection in both those races plus have tips for races at
Yarmouth and Kempton Park almost six hours apart.
Oisin Murphy will be in action at Kempton, beginning the day six winners ahead of William Buick in the jockeys' championship with six days remaining.
However, it's far from over with Buick's eight rides at Wolverhampton including five chalked up at 2-1 or shorter. Murphy has an inferior book, at least on paper. And on Tuesday, Buick has eight more rides, whereas Murphy has half that.
2.05 Yarmouth: Jawhary at 5-1 with bet365 and William Hill
Jawhary should be sharper for his encouraging run behind the well-backed Bascule over 1m4f at Lingfield last time as he was returning from a four-month break. He didn’t help himself with a sluggish start that day but first-time cheekpieces should help him keep his focus.
This more galloping track should also suit Jawhary better and the Lingfield form got a boost when the well-beaten Athers scored at Chelmsford on Saturday night.
Jawhary has had only two previous runs on turf and has more in his locker. He had the misfortune to bump into Miltary Mission at Salisbury on the first occasion before gaining an improbable success over 1m2f at Goodwood, when he traded at 999-1 in-running only to finish with a flourish.
The regally bred Sayf Al Dawla heads the market after his win at Salisbury last time but he didn’t look straightforward and the form is ordinary. Reina Del Mar is feared more but her 79-day absence is a niggle.
3.00 Musselburgh: Makanah at 7-2 with bet365
musselburgh
14:00 Musselburgh - Monday October 12
Makanah can repeat his success of last year
Roulston Scar’s two wins last month were achieved in three-runner races and, despite being favoured by the weights, he looks a skinny price at about 6-4 back on a slower surface. It is disconcerting that he has been well-beaten the past three times he has raced on going featuring the word “soft” in the description.
Makanah is fully effective on easy ground and is fancied to repeat his success of 12 months ago. He is unlucky not to be 3/3 at this track – his only defeat here being when denied a clear run inside the final furlong and being beaten a short head by Mokaatil over course and distance in August.
Makanah was not at his best in Group Three company at Newbury last time but this is easier and he is the type to quickly bounce back.
4.10 Musselburgh: Zip at 10-1 with bet365
Richard Fahey’s gey gelding does not know how to run a bad race and returned from three months off with a typically solid effort at Ayr last time when beaten just over a length in a competitive affair.
This is a decent race of its kind, too, but Zip has his optimum conditions and he won’t need to improve much on that performance at Ayr – if at all – to get his head back in front.
He runs off the same mark and Billy Garritty, who got a good tune out of him last time, keeps the ride.
8.00 Kempton: Donya at a general 12-1
Backing horses rated in the mid 50s after 99 days off the track carries a high-risk tariff but Donya, formerly trained by Mohamed Moubarak, is interesting at double-figure digits on her first start for Ian Williams.
She offered little on her first three starts at big prices in novice/maiden company at up to 1m2f, but the market spoke in her favour when she made her handicap bow over 1m4f at Lingfield in June. However, the combination of trip and heavy ground seemed against her.
Donya’s latest start over a mile at Chelmsford, when beaten a nose by Solomons Judgment, was much more like it, especially as little went right for her. She was hampered early on and got shuffled back to the rear and then, at the end of the race, had to switch very wide to challenge.
Solomons Judgment has since won twice more and is now rated 11lb higher. Donya has been nudged up 3lb but I’ve no doubt she can win off her present rating and the drop back to 7f is not a concern.

Zeus Power left enough in the tank to wear down Catchintsavo and win the Oddschecker Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree.
Catchintsavo had disputed the lead with Dalston Lad for much of the race but the field were well bunched as the extended three-mile Grade One began to take shape.
The Joseph O’Brien-trained Zeus Power (3-1) came to challenge Catchintsavo at the final hurdle and jumped slightly ahead before J J Slevin had him assert his authority as they charged for home to hold off Catchintsavo by two and three-quarter lengths. The fast-finishing Johnny’s Jury took third.

Grey Dawning perfectly executed a drop back in trip to get the better of a fascinating duel with long-time leader Solness in the JCB Melling Chase at Aintree.
The Joseph O’Brien-trained Solness – who was moving up from two miles – took up his customary front-running position and disputed the early lead with Gidleigh Park before asserting his authority down the back straight, moving around two lengths clear.
But Dan Skelton’s Grey Dawning, who was last seen finishing a brave fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, was racing enthusiastically and jumping well, always waiting in the wings to launch his challenge.
Harry Skelton moved the 5-1 chance to the front with two fences to go and he jumped into the lead over the last, but Solness refused to wilt and a thrilling battle ensued with Grey Dawning’s stamina seeing him edge a neck verdict.
On the decision to drop back to two and a half miles, rather than contesting the Aintree Bowl over three miles on Thursday, Dan Skelton said: “I was always going to come to this. What we were doing we were doing well at, but we weren’t quite winning, so you have to change things and try something different.
“We turned for home in a Gold Cup second and couldn’t quite win it, so we then had to start boxing clever and we felt dropping back in trip was the right thing to do.
“We didn’t put the cheekpieces on because he’s ungenuine, they were just a little something extra over this trip – you might as well have them and not need them than need them and not have them.
“We felt he’d really see out the trip, which he needed to. You saw two great horses having a right good go and all credit to Solness – being in front the whole way, what a horse to put in a run like that.
“It was our day in the end and it’s a great outcome for a phenomenal owner (Robert Kirkland). He’s been through the mill a bit, unfortunately his wife died a couple of weeks ago. He’s a very patient man, everyone deserves their go sometimes and he’s had his go.
“He’s been a great horse and he knows how to dance the big dances now. We’re not quite good enough to win a Gold Cup, but we can dance some other dances.”
Jockey J J Slevin was proud of the performance of Solness in defeat, saying: “It was a great run, Joseph brought him here in great shape.
“I knew he’d keep fighting and he did in fairness, but the winner is a good horse.
“He’s a very good horse on his day.”
Henry de Bromhead said of the Ryanair Chase winner Heart Wood, who was beaten into third as a 6-5 favourite: “I’d say it it all just happened a bit quick over a furlong shorter on a sharper track.
“He’s probably always been more of two-and-a-half to three-miler than a two to two-and-a-half horse, but he stayed on really well.
“We’ll go to Down Royal over three miles early next season and we’ll investigate that now. He’s had a fantastic year, we’d obviously love to win but he’s had a great season.”
Jo Tizzard was also pleased with JPR One in fourth, saying: “He’s run another great race but he just comes up a bit shy in Grade Ones.
“He’s had a great season, it’s unfair to call him a fun horse really because he’s better than that.
“He’s rated 160 though, which is a lot of weight in handicaps.”

Storming George timed his challenge to perfection to spring a surprise in the ThatPrizeGuy Top Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree.
Philip Hobbs and Johnson White’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle runner-up and 4-5 favourite Sober Glory disputed the lead with Dan Skelton’s Sinnatra on the first circuit before the race took shape three flights from home.
Sinnatra was the first to lay down his challenge on the rail with Baron Noir coming up on his outside with Sober Glory feeling the exertions of his bold Cheltenham endeavours one of the first beaten.
However, it was the fast-finishing 16-1 shot Storming George who loomed large going best and Jack Quinlan sent him clear after the last to give Neil King a first Grade One success, with Sinnatra left two and three-quarter lengths adrift in second.
An emotional King said: “It’s fantastic to finally win a Grade One.
“We bought this horse as a store at Goffs and it’s been a fabulous journey for a wonderful owner.
“Jack gave him a smashing ride, to be honest I didn’t think he looked that happy for much of the race but when he was still there three out I knew he’d stay on.
“I pitched him into the Grade One here on Boxing Day and I don’t waste Grade One entries, but when he came home he was sick so we put a line through that.
“We probably rode him too aggressively at Kempton (when well beaten) in the Dovecote, but I knew he was better than a handicapper and I was keen to come here for this and I’m over the moon.
“He’ll jump a fence, I’m sure he’ll go novice chasing next season, he’s always been a great jumper.
“I’ve been training 30 years and to finally win a Grade One, it’s been bloody hard work, we do it day in and day out for the love of horses. It’s fantastic.”
The first two could clash again over fences next term after Skelton outlined his intention to tackle the larger obstacles next season with Sinnatra.
Skelton said: “Harry got off him after Huntingdon and said ‘run this horse every three weeks’ to get him some education, put some miles under his belt and he’ll man up and learn how to become a racehorse.
“He’s done that today, his jumping was very good. If we’d got beat half a length I’d have been really annoyed, but fair play to the winner who has won comfortably in the end.
“I think we’ve run a very solid race and we look forward to going chasing with him (next season).”
Similar also applies to the third Baron Noir, who went one better than his Cheltenham Festival fourth to finish third this time in just his second outing in Grade One company.
Alan King said: “He’s run great and has learned to settle – he probably wants two and a half miles going forward.
“He’s finished for the season and he’ll go novice chasing next year. I might start him at two miles, but he’ll get further.
“I’m delighted for my neighbour. He’s a great man and if I couldn’t win I’m glad he did.”
Meanwhile, the Sober Glory team were another to suggest chasing could lie in wait next term after being left to consider if his Cheltenham efforts “left a bit of a mark” at the end of a fine novice hurdling campaign.
White said: “I think overall he’s run a game race. He had a contested lead, which wasn’t a problem at all, but he probably wasn’t quite as slick at his hurdles as he has been in the past.
“Perhaps Cheltenham left a bit of a mark on him, but we’ve got a very exciting horse to look forward to for next season, so that’s the most important thing.
“I would say we’ll go chasing. We’ll probably start off over two miles for his first run and progress from there.”
