2.05 Newbury: Aviation
Aviation was a decent novice hurdler last season, but judged on two runs this season, looks as though he could be an even better chaser.
Lucy Wadham’s gelding has improved in his two runs over fences and, very significantly, was a good second at this track last time out. He was still staying on really well after jumping around Newbury last time, only going down by three-quarters of a length.
He looks as though he might improve again for this step up in trip and he might well be the one with the most upside in a race that looks as though it will be worth watching for future winners.
7.00 Kempton: Maid In Chelsea
Made In Chelsea won a maiden and a novice event over five furlongs at the back end of 2024, but hasn’t been able to land a handicap since then despite a few decent efforts.
She has dropped a stone since she was first given a mark and definitely showed she was up to winning a race off this mark on her latest run. It could well be that seven furlongs is now her trip and, if she could get a bit more of a lead here, this could be her day.
Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton, who had such a great year in 2025, has already had a couple of winners in January.
8.00 Kempton: Buccabay
This is a very tight sprint and may be made even trappier by the lack of obvious pace in the race but Eve Johnson Houghton might well also be the go to for this one.
Buccabay won a slightly higher grade handicap over course and distance in December off a 3lb higher mark, but then failed to follow up in a similar race at Southwell on New Year's Day.
Things didn’t go his way in that Southwell race and he stayed on nicely after being shuffled back at a crucial stage. He won off 85 in May of last year, so his handicap mark is not the issue, and provided the race isn’t too messy, I expect a good show.
