Webber on weather watch as he mulls Imperial Cup and Festival options for Gwafa

Thu 1 Mar 2018

Paul Webber is hoping the weather picks up soon so he can run Gwafa in the Matchbook Imperial Cup at Sandown on Saturday week.

Webber is desperate for decent ground to be able to run the 2016 Swinton Hurdle winner, who was given some respite by the handicapper after over a year off the track.

"He wants it better rather than soft, so it depends on how much snow they get. Obviously he's in the County Hurdle too, which he'll get into I think," said Webber.

"We're just waiting on the weather as he ran very well at Wolverhampton recently behind a horse who is very hard to beat (Dubawi Fifty).

"We took him to Kempton on Tuesday for a spin before Mr (Nicky) Henderson et al did all theirs, and he worked very nicely indeed.

"He's still unexposed over hurdles and the handicapper dropped him 9lb while he was off. That means he's only 3lb higher than when he won the Swinton, that's why we've gone back hurdling, otherwise we'd stick to the Flat.

"Touch wood we can run him if the ground is nice, if not at Sandown then at Cheltenham."
