Weather watch: Chelmsford check again for Saturday card

Fri 2 Mar 2018

Chelmsford's meeting on Saturday evening must pass an 8am inspection.

Light snow is forecast to move in from 3pm on Friday until well into the evening.

Clerk of the course Andy Waitt is hoping for the best with roads and surrounding areas now clear and as the fixture takes place in the evening, officials should have extra time to move whatever snow falls.

"We've had no snow so far today, but looking at the images, it will reach us around 3pm and snow intermittently until about 11pm, but it is only supposed to be light snow," said Waitt.

"The temperature is due to rise so if we only have that to clear, we'll be in a better position to make a decision at 8am.

"Surrounding areas are fine, local roads are all clear, we're pretty much on top of the site but we couldn't make the decision now because of the forecast we've got.

"My overriding concern is health and safety."

Officials at Lingfield will also inspect at 8am ahead of the afternoon card that features the Listed Spring Cup, but Friday's action was abandoned.

Clerk of the course George Hill tweeted: "Friday's meeting ABANDONED due to overnight frost and severe wind chill. Temperatures not rising above freezing and snow showers due this afternoon."

Sunday's meetings at Huntingdon and Sedgefield have been beaten by the elements too.

Huntingdon's clerk of the course Jack Pryor inspected at 8am and reported the ground to be unraceable with little prospect of improvement.

"We were looking more positive yesterday, we had three centimetres of snow and that was doing quite a nice job of insulating the track, but the frost has really got in the ground now and it is pretty solid," said Pryor.

"We've had temperatures of minus 5C and below for the last three or four nights and it's just got into the ground. With the temperatures as they are and snow forecast for today, there is no chance of improving in time to race."

An inspection was held at Sedgefield at 7am on Friday morning ahead of the weekend's fixture, and the decision was made to call off the meeting.

The racecourse tweeted: "Unfortunately Sunday's meeting has been abandoned due to snow."
