Karl Burke had a terrific time last year and. and before racing on Monday, has had six winners from his past ten runners.
Triple Charged did not add to Burke’s tally in 2024 but ran well enough most starts and has been both gelded and dropped considerably by the handicapper.
To judge by his latest effort it looks as though his turn is not far away as he had absolutely no way though during the final furlong at Newcastle last time.
That was his first run for five months and though he finished just behind topweight Blue Lakota - who also suffered trouble in running but was race fit and on a roll - I am hoping he can improve for that comeback on 1lb better terms.
3.22 Southwell: Saligo Bay
Saligo Bay is an interesting horse in that he seems to know when he is fancied to run well. All his wins and better runs have been when favourite or when being very well backed.
I will be watching the market and, even if it is not Tuesday, I am pretty sure there will be a day for him again soon.
He wasn’t knocked about on his first run for the Sam England yard, which has been in pretty good form recently.
He ended up beating only one home but in the autumn of 2023 he improved massively on his second run after a break and then went on to win on the next start.
He is well handicapped, having run a decent second at Sandown off a 7lb higher mark as recently as June. He has yet to prove himself on an artificial surface but I am happy to run that risk, especially if the market speaks in his favour.
5.45 Newcastle: Mondammej
Mondammej looks like he is a poster boy for wind operations as this former Group class contender has not been out of the first two in six starts since having his breathing tinkered with.
He won by 2½ lengths very comfortably last time out and a 4lb penalty seems unlikely to stop him.
It might be asking a bit too much of him to get back to his peak form at the age of eight but there is no doubt he still has room to win again off a mark of 82.
