The shorties did the trick last week. Battaash shortened up a fair bit, but South Seas wasn't to be in the mile handicap. For what it is worth I’m not giving up on him and I think he has a big handicap in him. The Balmoral Handicap on Champions Day, for instance, could be just the race to suit.
Evening racing is the interest on Friday.
I was a (frustrated) supporter of Maid Up at Goodwood in the Lillie Langtry and she has franked the form and a bit more of her defeat of Love To Breeze at Goodwood in June.
We have not seen Ed Vaughan’s filly since, but she must be very well treated off just four pounds higher.
In some ways I worry she will not get the pace to suit back in trip but ultimately, she could be so well handicapped it won’t matter and should prove hard to beat.
I think the step back up in trip will suit her and she has got form on easy ground, so her chances will not be hindered if the rain does arrive.
This daughter of Pivotal won at Newbury on soft over a mile last year for all connections said they were concerned about conditions.
She has won on quick too and ran well last time when she was perhaps done for toe, but she did keep on and shape for a return to a mile.
There’s lots of pace on so I fancy she’ll sit just off it under a jockey who has ridden her before.
I fancy Four Kingdoms to go well here, particularly if they crawl. However, Cliffs Of Dover is a fair selection at the prices and if the rain comes he will shorten up.
Not that he wants it soft but any jar out of this summer ground will be no bad thing and he has been overlooked off the back of a disappointing run at Kempton last time.
He’s progressed nicely on the all-weather but has nothing to prove on turf based upon his hurdles form and still looks well treated on the level.
He refused to settle last time, which is a little concerning given the lack of obvious pace here but that was his first run since March and I wouldn’t be surprised if they let him go on today.
He looked good at Ascot when winning on reappearance and yard debut. Up eight pounds and back in trip, he blew the start at Nottingham and then raced alone back over six furlongs last time out.
That wasn’t an obvious excuse but there’s enough in it to think he’ll go better here at a bigger than expected 7-1. I'm not sure he's done improving for new connections, this looks to be his trip and if he gets rolling here he could be tough to peg back.
