Tom Hogan to press on with Gordon Lord Byron following Qatar display

Mon 26 Feb 2018

Tom Hogan has no intention of calling time on Gordon Lord Byron's career following his fine effort in defeat in Qatar on Friday.

The multiple Group One-winning veteran was having his first run as a 10-year-old in the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cup and was unlucky not to finish closer than fourth after being forced to throw down his challenge widest of all in the latter stages of the one-mile contest.

Hogan will see how his stable stalwart recovers from his exertions once he has returned to Ireland, but he is hopeful of another profitable campaign once the turf season kicks in this spring.

Hogan said: "It was a great performance and we couldn't be happier with him.

"It was just unfortunate that he got caught wide. He got shuffled back on the second-last bend, so he had to go wide and he was 10th turning for home.

"It's a shame we didn't pick up a bit more prize-money, but we're delighted with him really and he's still got loads of fire in his belly."

Hogan added: "We'll get him home and see how he is, but he'll probably have a similar campaign to last year.

"I'll have a look but I don't know if there is anything else for him on the all-weather, so we'll probably wait until the turf season gets going.

"We might have another go at the Greenlands Stakes and there is also the Gladness over seven furlongs, so we'll see.

"There'll be loads of opportunities for him."
