The Verdict Extra: three horses to follow based upon RaceiQ data

This week on The Verdict we focused on the action at York where the outstanding time performances were produced by Economics in the Dante and Giavellotto in the Yorkshire Cup. 

Aside from the excellent action at York, I thought it was worth highlighting the performance of Mountain Breeze at Newmarket who is now a best-priced 5-2 for the Albany at Royal Ascot. 

That Newmarket race looks as if it will work out well and, in particular, I think the youngster that finished second to Mountain Breeze is a must for your Racing TV Tracker.

Race: Second in the Tattersalls £40,000 EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes.

This filly shaped like a sure-fire future winner in finishing second on her debut behind Mountain Breeze. She raced in last place (10th) following a tardy break from the stalls, and her break speed is highlighted by how long it took her to reach 20 mph in comparison to the winner.

1st - Mountain Breeze: 0-20mph: 2.44s

2nd - New Charter: 0-20mph: 2.65s

She raced in last until making a forward move after three furlongs. That move initially took her from 10th to 8th as she recorded 11.41s for F4, and she then continued her forward move in F5 recording a split of 11.51s. 

Both of those Race iQ spits were faster than the winner. Royal Charter then slowed in the final furlong recording 12.64s as she tired, but this was still fast enough to take her into second. 

Her effort through F4 and F5 took its toll, but that move highlights that this filly has plenty of ability. She is stoutly bred and will stay seven furlongs when required. For now, she looks likely to win next time out with this debut experience behind her.

Race: Second in the Darley Fillies' Novice Stakes.

The 14f novice stakes on the same card also produced a horse for your Racing TV Tracker.

This filly was making her second start and was stepping up four furlongs in trip from her debut. She was well backed but lost out to her stable companion Precious Jewel.

This was a slowly run race that was dominated by the winner, as evidenced by the winners Finishing Speed Percentage (FSP) which was recorded by Race iQ as being 112.35%. 

This means that she was 12.35% faster in the final three furlongs than the previous 11. In essence, Precious Jewel got an easy lead in front, and was able to quicken from the front. 

Blessed Honour raced in last (6th) and quickened better than the winner, but she had too much to do. She had given away a tactical advantage and despite impressing with her finishing effort, could not reel the winner in.

The final three-furlong splits detailed below reveal just how well Blessed Honour did in the face of being at a positional disadvantage.

Final three Furlong splits:

1st - Precious Jewel: 34.85s

2nd - Blessed Honour: 34.60s

Those final three furlongs can be further disseminated into individual furlong splits showing that Blessed Honour flashed through the penultimate furlong (F11) in 11.06s compared to the winner who recorded 11.17s.

Blessed Honour was unlucky not to win, but was faced with an impossible task trying to sprint form last to first in a race that was very steadily run. She should be winning soon.

Race: First in the Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies Sprint Stakes.

I will gradually be introducing stride length data into The Verdict and it is going to be a useful analytical tool. I think we can decipher that Fairy Godmother, who won at Naas on Sunday, can be analysed as being very useful using this data.

This filly was very impressive in closing from the back of the field (6th). She was slowest into stride taking 2.82s to reach 20mph. She warmed to her task and finished very strongly to win going away. She made a move through the fourth furlong when quickening past her rivals and was very strong at the finish. 

Her final two furlongs of 23.08s can be compared with the runner–up who clocked 23.46s.

Her surge through the final three furlongs can be tracked by looking at her sectionals, but also her stride data which shows that she recorded a maximum stride length in the fourth furlong of 8.02 metres. 

That is a long stride for a two-year-old, and one that is rarely seen in a youngster. For example, when Mountain Breeze won at Newmarket, her maximum stride length was 7.52 metres. 

Fairy Godmother's stride length in the race is detailed below and we can see just how well she warmed to her task as the race went on:

F1: 6.62 metres

F2: 7.77 metres

F3: 7.97 metres

F4: 8.02 metres

F5: 7.67 metres

F6: 7.06 metres

No other horse in the race got near to the stride length she achieved in F3 and F4 and it is my belief that she is a Group One filly. I make her a bet at the general 5-2 on offer for the Albany at Royal Ascot.
