The Price Is Right: Enigmatic worth siding with in Sandown finale on Tuesday

Sandown Park hosts a variety of interesting and competitive races on Tuesday evening, where summer ground and sunshine is forecasted to be the order of the evening.

I have picked out a pair of horses to keep an eye on. Both come here on the back of pipe-openers on their seasonal debuts and could be underestimated on their second outing of the campaign.

5.35 Sandown: GERANIUM

Sandy Steve gets on well with champion jockey Oisin Murphy and the pair look set to build on a good second at Kempton last time out. The drop in trip should suit and he’s the horse to beat.

The one to take him on with at a price could be Hughie Morrison’s GERANIUM who returned to action at Newmarket and, although well beaten, it was a more encouraging effort than her final start of 2019 back in November.

Last summer, this five-year-old mare was in excellent form, dotting up by six lengths at Newmarket, before finishing a good second here at Sandown off the same mark she runs off on Tuesday (70).

Ten furlongs and fast ground is the name of the game for Geranium and if she can build on her seasonal debut, she could put up a bold showing.

8.45 Sandown: ENIGMATIC

Another horse who could improve on a low key, but relatively promising return to action, is Joseph Parr’s ENIGMATIC.

Formerly in the care of his grandfather Alan Bailey, Parr has taken over the training licence at the Newmarket stables. He has saddled two winners from eight runners in the past couple of weeks and is a trainer to certainly keep an eye on.

This six-year-old only managed the one victory last season and her handicap mark has dipped from a high of 90 down to 81 for this one mile, class 4 contest as a result.

Having won first time out last year, Enigmatic was well backed to score last time, but he raced as if he just needed it and it’s reasonable to expect a fitter horse here.

This is a really competitive heat to close the Sandown action, but Josephine Gordon can hopefully get a good tune out of the selection and prove to be a shrewd each-way shout.
