Suzi's Connoisseur comes good for deserved success at Newcastle

Suzi's Connoisseur ended a losing run stretching back to October 2014 when scooping a valuable pot for the sunbets.co.uk Handicap at Newcastle.The six-year-old had never even won for his present trainer Stuart Williams, but had gone close in a host of highly-competitive handicaps on turf.But finally he had his day, to grab the first prize of £32,400 for connections.Holiday Magic took the field along in the centre of the course at a sedate pace for a seven-furlong contest and made a good fist of justifying favouritism.However, Oisin Murphy delivered Suzi's Connoisseur (9-1) with a strong run on the far side of the track to lead inside the final furlong and prevail by a head from 7-2 shot Holiday Magic. Horsted Keynes was just half a length away in third.Williams said: "He's been a bit unlucky in a few big handicaps. He definitely deserved to get his head in front in one and I'm very pleased."I'm sure having run here for the first time earlier this year helped him and we sat a little bit closer to the pace this time."We discussed tactics beforehand - we didn't think there would be much pace on and it's worked out well."They've added a seven-furlong handicap to the (All-Weather Championship) finals' day at Lingfield and he will go there."Natural Scene (7-4 favourite) looked a cut above the opposition with an authoritative performance in the Betway Handicap.The step up to an extended two miles proved no object to the Godolphin-owned four-year-old, as Saeed bin Suroor's charge demolished the opposition.Leading a furlong and a half out under Josephine Gordon, Natural Scene powered home by two and a half lengths from London Prize.Spinwheel (6-4 favourite) held Barwah by a diminishing neck in the 32Red Casino Fillies' Handicap.The Mark Johnston-trained bottom-weight kicked on some way out after always being prominent and was kept up to her work by PJ McDonald to land the spoils.David Barron's Batten The Hatches (7-2), a half-brother to Group Two-winning sprinter Pearl Secret, made a winning debut in the 32Red.com Maiden Stakes in the hands of Phillip Makin, as he proved two lengths too strong for 10-11 favourite Hitchcock.Lewis Edmunds' move to take Thello (7-2) to the front two furlongs out proved crucial as the Garry Moss-trained five-year-old held Restive and Taopix, who were separated by a nose, in the Betway Best Odds Guaranteed Plus Classified Stakes.The John Quinn-trained Indian Pursuit (7-1) won for only the second time in his career as he defeated Spirea by a head in the Betway Best Odds Guaranteed Plus Handicap under Jason Hart.Life Knowledge (4-1), trained by Patrick Holmes, got off the mark on his 16th career start when running away with the Betway Apprentice Handicap by three and a quarter lengths under Paula Muir.
