Sternrubin to miss Cesarewitch and embark on chasing career

Wed 4 Oct 2017

Sternrubin is set to sidestep an engagement in the Betfred Cesarewitch at Newmarket on Saturday week and will instead embark upon a career over fences this autumn.

The Philip Hobbs-trained six-year-old has won four races over hurdles, including The Ladbroke at Ascot and the Gerry Feilden Hurdle at Newbury.

He claimed his second victory on the Flat with a dominant display at Ffos Las in August, but having finished well beaten in last month's Cesarewitch Trial, connections are eyeing a change of tack.

Owner Terry Warner said: "I don't think he will be good enough for the Cesarewitch and he will go novice chasing now.

"He schooled the other day under Richard Johnson and apparently he schooled quite well.

"It will be remarkable as he will have raced over hurdles, on the Flat and now over fences. He will be out in the next three or four weeks.

"He would have huge weights in handicap hurdles and he is not very big and it would be unfair for him to hump big weights round."
