Škvařilová-Řezáčová seeks to become second female jockey to land Velka Pardubicka

Sat 10 Oct 2020

Veronika Škvařilová-Řezáčová seeks to become only the second female jockey to win the 130th running of the Velka Pardubicka in the Czech Republic – live and exclusive on Racing TV Extra on Sunday.

A field of 18 will take in 31 obstacles over a shade over four-and-a-quarter miles in this thrilling cross-country race, which is due off at 3.40pm (BST). Full, dedicated, live coverage of the race, hosted by Mark Johnson, will be broadcast on Racing TV Extra (which is just two clicks or taps away via the website, mobile, RTV Apps and TV Apps).

Škvařilová-Řezáčová, who rides All Scater, will try to follow in the footsteps of Lata Brandisová, who won the race in 1937, and whose story was encapsulated in Richard’s Askwith’s book, Unbreakable, which recently won Biography of the Year at the Daily Telegraph British Sports Book Awards.

All Scater will face a stiff task though with four previous winners in the line-up, including reigning champion, Theophilos, and the 2018 hero Tzigane Du Berlais, ridden by five-time Velka winner Jan Faltejsek, a name familiar to British audiences.

The other previous winners are No Time To Lose, successful in 2017, and Ribelino, who was awarded the 2015 Velka after the first-past-the-post failed a drugs test.

Two jockeys will be hoping to end the unwanted record of having the most Velka rides without winning. Jaroslav Myska (Lodgian Whistle) and Marek Stromsky (Stretton) are both having their 18th Velka rides. Stromsky has twice been first past the post but was disqualified in 2008, after missing a marker, and suffered the same fate in 2015, when his mount failed a drugs test.

One horse who might ring a bell with British and Irish viewers is Bugsie Malone, who was a five-time winner for Chris Gordon.

A recording of the race will be shown on the Racing TV main channel (Sky 426, Virgin UK 536 and Virgin Ireland 411), which is showing action from Goodwood, The Curragh and Limerick on Sunday.
