Sharjah returns in the Morgiana Hurdle (Focusonracing)
The Grade One heat is dominated by
Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott with the first-named fielding both
Sharjah and Echoes In Rain while his rival runs Abacadabras and Zanahiyr.
Sharjah claimed the Morgiana in 2018 and won the Matheson Hurdle on the first of his four runs last term, but then had to settle for third behind Honeysuckle in the Irish Champion Hurdle, before taking second to the supermare at both Cheltenham and Punchestown.
Echoes In Rain made rapid strides last term and after claiming two Grade Two victories, she triumphed at the highest level when landing the Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown.
Noel Moran, the woner of Zanahiyr, was a special guest on this week's On The Wire. Watch what he had to say
Zanahiyr was among the top rank of juvenile hurdlers for Elliott last term and is already a winner this season having returned with an effortless victory at Down Royal last month.
Abacadabras won the Aintree Hurdle back in April, but finished only fourth to Honeysuckle at Punchestown with upwards of 10 lengths to find with Sharjah.
Elliott said on Friday: “We are looking forward to running both horses. I couldn’t have been happier with Zanahiyr at Down Royal and this is another step up again and a big step for a four-year-old but he’s been good since and it will tell us more about where he fits in.
“Abacadabras was second in the Down Royal race last year before coming here to win the Morgiana so it was a logical starting point for him this season. He was very good at Aintree and it was too early to say what would have happened at Cheltenham but he’s in good nick.”
Joseph O’Brien provides the fifth contender in
Darasso, who makes a swift return to action having won the Lismullen Hurdle last
Sunday.
“Darasso is in good form since his win in Navan," O'Brien said. "He won very well that day. It’s not a big field here and there’s good prize money. Ideally, he probably wants a little bit further at this stage of his life but the horses in general are going well and he’s in good shape, coming back off a near career best run. So we’ll let him get his chance. If you’re not in you can’t win and hopefully he’ll get some prize money.”
Vanillier, winner of the Albert Bartlett last year, leads the way in the Liam & Valerie Brennan Florida Pearl Novice Chase.
He could finish only third on his initial chase outing at Down Royal, but Gavin Cromwell ups him to Grade Two level for his second start.
Sixshooter impressed with a debut win for Noel Meade at Galway and he is one of five opponents along with Elliott’s pair of Fancy Foundations and Run Wild Fred, plus Dewcup and Ballyshannon Rose.
Owner Kenny Alexander’s pair of Telmesomethinggirl and Gauloise top nine contesting the Frontline Security Grabel Mares Hurdle. Cheltenham winner Heaven Help Us and Peter Fahey’s Royal Kahala also feature in the Listed heat.
