Royal winner obliges at Lingfield as Daphne strikes

Thu 2 Nov 2017

Daphne, owned by the Queen, gave William Haggas a Listed double at Lingfield when coming through strongly in the final furlong to claim the 32Red EBF Stallions River Eden Fillies' Stakes.

Jim Crowley had the four-year-old filly close to the pace, which was set first by Gakku before Cribbs Causeway went on fully a mile from home.

Melodic Motion put in a strong bid to give James Doyle a four-timer but Daphne (7-2) burst between that horse and the eventual third Cribbs Causeway to lead inside the final furlong and land the spoils by a length and a half.

Maureen Haggas said: "I wondered whether this track would suit her, but she quickened away nicely and we are thrilled to bits. It went to plan.

"She looked happy and ran really well. We had her in the spring but she had a nasty injury as she struck into herself that's why she didn't run for so long.

"I'm not sure what we do, she is in good form but I am not sure what races there are for her. She has had a very light year and if there are races it might be a good idea to kick on."

She added: "It just went wrong at Yarmouth. They went no pace and they had a bit of a fight and she is not one for a fight.

"Jim got the hang of her today. She was drawn well enough that she went forward and if there was no pace she could have gone herself. It's up to John (Warren) and the Queen if she stays in training."

Ralph Beckett said of the runner-up Melodic Motion: "It was a messy race, but she has had a long year. She will be finished now, but she will be back next year."
