Kate Mandley shares her best bets for Royal Ascot next week.
WEDNESDAY
4.20 - Prince Of Wales’s Stakes: Ombudsman
General odds: 5-4
John and Thady Gosden’s Ombudsman is among the best in training and has won eight of his 11 starts.
He had to work hard to beat Gethin at Sandown last month, but his class and willingness got him home in front.
He faces tougher competition here in the shape of the Arc winner, Daryz, but he was a stunning winner of this race 12 months ago and can retain his crown.
5.00 - Royal Hunt Cup: Classic
General odds: 16-1
The Royal Hunt Cup is always one of toughest handicap puzzles of the year but Richard Hannon’s Classic has outrun his odds in his two runs this season and can do so again.
Classic has contested two big-field contests over a mile at Newbury this season, finishing second in the Spring Cup, when beaten three quarters of a length by Linwood, before winning there last time.
The son of Dubawi is enjoying his best season yet as a six-year-old and can continue his forward momentum by adding a Royal Ascot victory to his record.
THURSDAY
4.15 - Gold Cup: Rahiebb
General odds: 4-1
Rahiebb looks capable of reversing the St Leger form with Scandinavia in the Gold Cup after making an impressive return to the track when running out a ready winner of the Yorkshire Cup last month.
The first two home in the Doncaster Classic head the market here and, with just a neck between them that day, there is little deficit for Rahiebb to claw back.
Scandinavia made tough work of his Saval Beg Levmoss Stakes success last time out and may just find Rahiebb too strong in their rematch.
FRIDAY
3.05 - Commonwealth Cup: Venetian Sun
General odds:15-8
Venetian Sun landed the Albany Stakes last year and looks a worthy favourite for the Commonwealth Cup.
Following a disappointing effort in the 1000 Guineas, Karl Burke dropped Venetian Sun back to 6f in the Sandy Lane Stakes and she gained an easy success.
She holds plenty of high-class form over 6f, including when beating eventual Irish 2000 Guineas winner Gstaad in the Prix Morny, and will be tough to beat.
4.20 - Coronation Stakes: Precise
General odds: Evens
Precise was said to need the run when making little impact in the 1000 Guineas and showed her true colours when convincingly reversing the form with stablemate True Love in the Irish equivalent last time.
The Aidan O’Brien pair are set to meet again in the Coronation Stakes and Precise can confirm the placings of the Irish Classic.
