Roger Varian has high hopes for his Cambridgeshire challengers

Roger Varian says Andrea Atzeni faced a difficult choice choosing between his two contenders for the bet365 Cambridgeshire at Newmarket on Saturday.

Varian runs the Sheikh Obaid-owned pair of Uae Prince and Sharja Bridge in the nine-furlong contest. The pair are both among the leading fancies, trading at 14-1 and 16-1, with Atzeni opting to partner the former.

“I think they’ve both got good chances, they have the right profile,” Varian told “I would think it would have been a hard call for Andrea. Maybe he thinks Uae Prince has a slightly more competitive weight (9st 2lb) than the other horse (who has 9st 9lb).”

Uae Prince has been absent since being edged out over a mile and a half at the Guineas meeting in May but the son of Sea The Stars goes well fresh and will also be equipped with first-time cheekpieces.

Sharja Bridge showed his wellbeing when going close at York last time, when a late stumble did not help him. Champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa has got the ride.

Varian said: “Uae Prince always works very well. He’s coming off a lay-off, so he will be fresh, and I think bringing him back in trip might suit him.

“Sharja Bridge is probably high enough in the weights but I think we’ll ride him a bit different. He’s been put in the race too early the last twice and I think he wants riding cold.

“He’s a strong traveller and even those he’s got a big weight I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t take Silvestre into the last furlong with every chance.”

The open nature of the 35-runner affair, which boasts prize money oif £160,000, is reflected by the fact that the bookmakers are betting 10-1 the field.
