Rain no pain for Jeffreys as he celebrates Yarmouth first

Driving rain failed to wipe the smile from the face of David Jeffreys after Kaylen’s Mischief provided him with his first winner in the Download The MansionBet App Handicap at Yarmouth.

Having previously spent spells with both Charlie Mann and Charlie Longsdon, the 33-year-old celebrated his landmark success as the lightly-raced six-year-old struck at the ninth time of asking with a tenacious length-and-a-half success.

Jeffreys said of his 12-1 winner: “Phil Kirby did a magnificent job with him, but he has just had his problems and his owner Mark Smith kindly let me have a go with him. Phil did the hard work with him, all I’ve done is get him fit.

“I’m so lucky to have the support of my wonderful wife, Harriet, and owners that are willing to give me a go.

“Mark has given unwavering support to me and my wife in allowing us to follow our dream. It has been a long old road, but we are there now.”

Declan Carroll hopes Tom Tulliver (9-4) can go on and match the exploits of his Group Three-winning half-brother Abel Handy after getting the better of a tight finish to take the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes by a neck.

Carroll said: “He is a nice two-year-old. Abel Handy was a good two-year-old for us and won the Cornwallis. I think there is more to come from this fellow.

“Abel Handy was sharper in his mind and this fellow maybe has to do it once or twice for the penny to drop a little bit. He is laid-back and workmanlike and is not one to bolt up, but there will be more to come.”

Phil Dennis maintained his unbeaten record aboard the Charlie McBride-trained Camachess (3-1) in completing a five-timer on the daughter of Camacho in the MansionBet Proud To Support British Racing Fillies’ Handicap.

McBride said: “She just seems to keep improving. We didn’t know if she would handle the ground, as she has never been on it before, but she ran well on good to soft at Sandown last year. She has been a pleasure to train.

“Phil has complete confidence in her, as every time he gets on her he feels they are going to win and for me that is so important. He will go anywhere to ride this filly and his agent is on the phone as soon as she is entered.”

Shaun Keightley praised the riding skills of Raul da Silva after he lifted home 11-race maiden Trouble Shooter (11-1) to victory by half a length in the MansionBet At Yarmouth Handicap.

Keightley said: “He is a lazy horse at home and that is what he needs – a good, strong ride, as he has a bit in reserve, it is about getting it out of him.

“We were confident he would handle the soft ground and we might go hurdling with him in the future.”
