There will be plenty of Cheltenham clues on offer this weekend at Sandown, Leopardstown and Musselburgh.
However, my attention will be on the big Saturday at
Lingfield which features the Listed Winter Derby Trial and the Listed Cleve Stakes which are both Fast Track Qualifiers for their respective divisions on All-Weather Championship Day.
Wissahickon, the short-priced favourite for the Winter Derby itself, is set to line up against a competitive field which could feature French and Irish raiders.
In the Cleve Stakes, all eyes are on the reigning champion Kachy who is coming into this off a record-breaking performance at Wolverhampton, while 2017 winner Lancelot Du Lac has the early booking of Adam Kirby which is eye-catching.
Anyway, here are my four best bets for Wednesday’s action on the all-weather.
Simple Thought looks to have a good chance of finally opening her account here having finished runner-up in four of her previous seven starts.
She has a similar profile to last week’s Lingfield winner St Peters Basilica who looked exposed beforehand but was able to put his experience to good use and beat rivals with less experience.
Simple Thought sets a decent standard with a rating of 77 - which is a high level for any newcomer to achieve - and is why I am taking on the Godolphin debutant Dawn Crusade.
Simple Thought may be able to boss this field from the front and the booking of Adam Kirby is a positive.
Adam Kirby he has a great chance of a quick-fire double aboard the Tony Carroll-trained
Happy Escape in the feature fillies handicap.
The five-year-old is two out of two so far this year and she is in the form of her life at present. She also seems to be still on the improve.
A lack of pace might be a worry but I am hoping that Southwell specialist Side Effect will go forward from stall one and hopefully set a good pace for her rivals to aim at.
Scorched Breath is a half-brother to Saturday’s Winter Derby Trial hopeful Cheifofchiefs and should be able to break his maiden in a what looks a weak novice auction stakes.
He ran a good race when third on debut at Kempton behind two horses with previous experience and can be expected to improve for that run.
Given the current cold snap, the usually slick all-weather track at Lingfield appears to be riding a little bit deeper which should not inconvenience this gelding who may eventually be better over further than this 6f.
Six Irish-raiders take aim at the eight-race card at
Wolverhampton on Wednesday evening and the best chance they have of a winner is Gordon Elliot’s
Counting Sheep in the finale.
This son of Morpheus stepped up on his debut run to finish second in a 1m Thurles maiden.
Although he was beaten ten lengths, he was six lengths clear of the third and the winner, Constantinopl, is an Epsom Derby hopeful.
Jamie Spencer has his first rides in Britain after spending some time in the US helping with Wesley Ward’s two-year-olds in Ocala, Florida.
While he was stateside, he rode the winner of the $75,000 Marie G Krantz Memorial Stakes at the Fair Grounds for Qatar Racing and partners.
