With an overall going stick reading of 8.3 at the time of writing, the ground is described as “Good to Firm” on day one of the Cambridgeshire meeting on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile. There does seem to be a good bit of rain in the forecasts, so do keep a close eye on changes before confirming your selections.
MARK JOHNSTON has trained two of the last three winners of the 3:00pm Tattersalls Stakes and his only runner here, Qaader, has to enter calculations despite one or two others having more obvious claims on recent form. However, the Night Of Thunder colt drops in class having ran in Group 2 company in his last three outings, while Jim Crowley continues to mop up plenty of winners, with eight to his name in the past fortnight.
MILDENBERGER (Leg 5, 3:35pm) has a lot going for him in the Rose Bowl Stakes, for trainer Mark Johnston and under the assured hands of Franny Norton. The strong stayer has won two of his last three outings and finished a good second in the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes at Newcastle last time. Five-year-olds have a good record in this race and Mildenberger is just as effective on the turf as he is the all-weather. He has 4lb in hand of his nearest rival on official ratings and if you want a Banker in your Placepot perm, he looks a strong candidate.
DELIBERATE ATTACK (Leg 1, 1:15pm) may be vulnerable to flashier types on paper for the opening maiden. However, David Menuisier’s youngster improved notably well from his Newbury debut to finish a decent sixth at Ascot last time. His style of racing suggests a step up to a mile today will help and he might just creep into the frame at rewarding odds.
CASPIAN QUEEN (Leg 3, 2:25pm) is a little hit and miss and yet to win in 2020, but the best of her form would entitle her to solid enough each-way claims here. Ryan Moore is booked and she dips back into handicap company now having finished fifth in a Listed event last time.
Just the five runners head to post in Leg 2 at 1:50pm and with just the two places up for grabs, it is important to nail this second race to ensure we proceed to the later stages of the Placepot. Last Sunset is yet to impress on the clock, while Lost In Space is untested over this trip of a mile. Instead then, it might pay to keep Mark Of The Man on side with Richard Hannon teaming up with top jockey Ryan Moore. The Markaz colt has excellent form for this grade, is steadily progressive and may just be underestimated.
