The weather has changed, the days are shorter and the nights are colder. We are edging closer and closer to the return of the National Hunt season proper but with eight days to go until Champions Day, there is a tricky Placepot puzzle at Newmarket to solve.
Here’s who we think is worth including in your perm today.
How’s the going?
After an onslaught of rain last week which saw 82mm fall in just three days, the weather cleared up at the start of the week in Newmarket. However, it returned with a vengeance on Wednesday and the going is set to be soft on Friday.
The Big Trend:
He has impressed us throughout the season and he will not want to lose steam at a track where much of his success comes from. WILLIAM BUICK has had 15 winners here this season in 57 rides, operating at a strike rate of 26%. He is just 10 winners down on Oisin Murphy and with seven rides today, he will be looking to close the gap. Five of those runners fall inside Placepot races, and they are:
12:45 - Leg 1 - Divine Light 13:15 - Leg 2 - Romantic Song 13:50 - Leg 3 - Nomadic Empire 15:00 - Leg 5 - Zakouski 15:35 - Leg 6 - Mother Earth
Interestingly we turn to the final leg, a race for two-year-olds where we find our Placepot Banker. Isabella Giles was devastating two weeks ago over the Rowley Mile, swatting aside Aidan O’Brien’s very fancied Monday. Admittedly his filly was not in the greatest of form but on testing ground she put in a remarkable time and Clive Cox looks as though he has got his hands on another superstar here. She can put her Classic credentials on show and with a rating of 110, and four wins from five, this is one not to miss.
15:35 - Leg 6 - ISABELLA GILES
Outsider to Consider:
The second leg of the Placepot is one that is a bit of an unknown. Eight of the 10 runners have not seen the racecourse before and the two that have did not impress. Sky Bright is our selection based on her breeding. She is a daughter of Gleneagles and granddaughter of Oasis Dream. She is bred to go further but we can really test her quality by watching her over this trip.
13:15 - Leg 2 - SUBTLE BEAUTY
The Group three at 2:25 has a completely different feel to it than the Group One and could trip up a lot of Placepot punters. Joseph O’Brien’s Thinking Of You is the clear and obvious favourite if she runs but Shine For You from Hannon’s yard is one to keep in the back of the mind. She was brilliant in a head to head battle last time out with a horse that is going places, Embarked. That sort of metal shown as a two-year-old is something that Hannon would have loved to watch and will do her plenty of good coming into this. She has plenty more to give than her official rating shows and she could make some impression today.
14:25 - Leg 4 - SHINE FOR YOU
