Cheltenham countdown: Phil Kirby considers options with Lady Buttons

Wed 28 Feb 2018

Lady Buttons could head back to Ireland for her next start if Phil Kirby decides to bypass the Cheltenham Festival.

Placed at Leopardstown's inaugural Dublin Racing Festival, she took her tally to two from two over fences at Newcastle last Saturday with the minimum of fuss.

"I haven't got a definite plan in mind, but she's come out of it fine," said Kirby.

"I'm not going to rule out the mares' race at Cheltenham (OLBG Mares' Hurdle), but I'm looking to see if there are any races in Ireland because there are just no races for her.

"There are no two-mile mares' novice chases, but there doesn't seem to be many where she can take on the boys even - if there is, I can't find them.

"I want to make use of her being a novice because she won't be a novice again.

"I keep saying she's best at two miles, but she might have to run over further because there's nothing else. She does get away with it, but I don't really want to do it.

"There's a good race at Navan during Cheltenham week (Webster Cup) which is worth a few bob (€45,000), but that's against the boys.

"If we aim towards that time, she'll run somewhere. She only had a schooling session and only went up the road Saturday so it took nothing out of her."
