Blottos, winner of the 2m3f handicap hurdle at Carlisle

Can build on his success having impressed with a gritty determination. The inexperienced gelding made virtually all on this first start outside novice company and looks a typical improver in the Trevor Hemmings colours.

I liked the way he battled for victory and he jumped well enough, despite being lightly raced.

Kincora Fort, winner of the 2m4f handicap chase at Huntingdon

Brought strong form into this good race. Noel Williams' consistent son of Brian Boru finished second on his chasing debut on Boxing Day over course and distance and beat The Bay Birch over the same trip at Leicester next time.

The runner-up subsequently bolted up at Towcester, albeit in a weak race. Kincora Fort acts on good and soft ground and beat strong rival Must Havea Flutter with the front two clear.

Jumping impeccably, he raced in second until the sixth and was ridden at the last before keeping on gamely. There should be more to come.

Malaya, second in the Grade 2 Adonis Hurdle at Kempton

Ran into a seriously talented rival when second to Redicean.

Paul Nicholls' classy four-year-old received 5lb from the favourite but was firmly put in her place.

However, there was plenty to admire about the mare's defeat as she pulled well of the rest.

Tracking the pace and close up four out, Malaya led narrowly before two out but was headed soon after.

Very lightly raced, there is improvement to come from this French import and connections will have been encouraged by this performance having watched her do too much early when second in testing ground at Aintree 77 days earlier.

She was rated 134 coming into the race and would be interesting in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham.
