Andy Stephens studies the feature races on the final day of the Craven meeting with the help of the RaceiQ data. SELECTION: QUINAULT each-way at a general 10-1
Record over 6f: eight wins from 13 starts.
Top Speed: 43.86mph. Fastest 0-20mph: 2.03sec.
Quinault is a smart, tough sprinter and is responsible for four of the top ten 0-20mph speeds in this field. His mantra is go hard, or go home, and from stall 5 he looks in the right place to attack.
The six-year-old, trained by Stuart Williams, usually leaves everything behind on the track, with most of his Finishing Speed percentages being under 100%. There are no hiding places in races he contests.
He’s won eight of his 13 races over six furlongs, has won half of the eight races when he’s been ridden by Marco Ghiani, and is also four from six when running in April or May.
Moreover, he is proven on the Rowley Mile and is four from six when running at Newmarket (both courses), plus already been successful in Saudi Arabia this year. At double-figure odds, he looks an each-way play.
Time For Sandals and
Washington Heights are feared most.
SELECTION: HIDDEN FORCE at a general 11-4
Top Speed: 41.21mph. Max stride length: 7.87 metres.
Final 2f on debut: 22.22sec.
Hidden Force is up in class after winning two steadily run races at Kempton, but can prove equal to the task.
The long-striding Frankel colt has made quite an impression, polishing off the final two furlongs in 22.22 seconds with ease on his debut over seven furlongs. And last time, upped to a mile, his penultimate furlong of 11.09sec without being extended (Wiliam Buick spent more time tilting his head to see how the others were going) again stamped him as a class act.
His in-form stable have won that race with Opera Ballo and Notable Speech in the past two years.
Going forwards, it will be interesting to see how far he can stretch out. His half-sister, Winter Snowfall, has won at up to 1m4f, and low stride cadence offers hope he will get at least ten furlongs.
Hawk Mountain has achieved much more but his pattern wins last term were achieved over a mile in the mud and eight furlongs on a sound surface is unlikely to show him to best advantage.
The respective winning times of those races were 103.36sec and 103.85sec. The mile handicaps on Tuesday's card at Newmarket (won by horses rated 83 and 92) were both won comfortably in under 99 seconds.
SELECTION: STORM FREE
Top Speed: 42.19mph.
Draw advantage: 0.78 lengths from stall 4
Storm Free is drawn low and the data suggest that is the place to be, giving him an immediate 0.78 length advantage.
He was progressive last season and was two from two on turf, winning at Nottingham and Leicester.
Storm Free won in a time 2.41 seconds quicker than the RaceiQ Par at the former track, with his RaceiQ Time Inex being 9.4 when the meeting average was 7.8. He looks one to follow.
