Admittedly, this eight-year-old is in danger of becoming a bit of a 'cliff' horse, but some of his runs last season were so eye-catching that I have to be with him at the double-figure odds available, and will be backing him at 10-1 for small stakes each-way.
He finished fourth in the bet365 Cambridgeshire in September last year over this course and distance, and shaped exceptionally well there by beating the group he raced with on the near side very easily.
He's off a similar rating again on Saturday, and faces similar ground conditions (he likes fast ground). He also finished fourth in the John Smith's Cup on his return last season at a big price, so he's got a proven record of running well fresh.
Rumstar was successful in this race 12 months ago, and was quite an easy winner. Given that Jonathan Portman's team are in such good form, I would expect Rumstar to be ready to go here, and be primed for his seasonal return again.
Portman has had four winners this week, and generally has a good record with horses returning from an absence. Rumstar also relished similar ground conditions last year, and he's drawn in stall 5, which I like, as the likes of Quinault and Five Ways, are likely to set a good gallop, and Rumstar is drawn in the middle of them.
I therefore think he will be following the pace, which will suit.
A three-year-old trained by Grant Tuer, I saw him when he ran at the Craven meeting over this course and distance 16 days ago, and that was a particularly pleasing comeback run considering, looking at him in the paddock beforehand, I thought he would improve for the outing.
He travelled very strongly throughout the race and I thought, for a long way, he was going to win, but he just tired late on. He has a marginal pull at the weights with Sovereign Spell, who beat him on that occasion.
With that slight adjustment in weights, and fitness being on his side this time, I would make him a strong selection at the 9-2 on offer. He's my nap of the day on Saturday.
