Mark Bradstock earmarks Richard Johnson for Coneygree ride at Haydock

Mon 14 Nov 2016

Richard Johnson will ride Coneygree in the Betfair Chase at Haydock next Saturday, subject to the champion jockey's availability.

Trainer Mark Bradstock has earmarked Johnson for the ride on the 2015 Gold Cup winner after regular partner Nico de Boinville suffered a broken arm at Cheltenham on Saturday.

"The plan is that Richard Johnson will ride him, if he is available. He's ridden him before, and that does help," said the Oxfordshire handler.

Johnson rode Coneygree at Newbury in February 2015 when the partnership claimed victory in the Denman Chase.

The nine-year-old will be having his first start for over a year after suffering an injury which thwarted his attempts at winning the Gold Cup for a second time.
