Marco Botti shelves Melbourne Cup bid with Dylan Mouth

Marco Botti is considering exploring other options abroad for Dylan Thomas after ruling him out of this year's Emirates Melbourne Cup.

The Newmarket trainer has shelved a trip to Australia for the six-year-old following his below-par effort in a Group Three at Newbury on Saturday.

Although plans for the son of Dylan Thomas remain fluid, Botti has earmarked the Pattison Canadian International or the Premio Jockey Club in Italy as possible targets.

Botti said: "I don't think Dylan Mouth is going to go to Melbourne. I would say that it is 95 per cent over.

"Obviously the race didn't pan out for him at Newbury. They went very steady and he doesn't have that kick or change of gear.

"I know anything is possible in the race as we have seen before, but you need a lot of luck and the owner didn't want to be going out there with an outsider.

"It is one thing if you are based in Australia with an outsider and another taking one there, what with the costs. He needed to be a little bit more convincing at Newbury for the owners to go all that way with him."

He added: "He will run again this season, for sure. There is the Canadian International. That could be quite competitive and the horse of David Simcock's (Desert Encounter) that beat him by over seven lengths could be going there.

"There is not much point running him in a Listed race here, but there is the Group One in Italy (Premio Jockey Club) that he ran in last year. We have just got to sit down and decide."
