Katie Midwinter's Friday tips: five each-way selections

A drop in class could allow Gnocchi to make the frame for James Horton. She is still seeking a first career win in her seventh start, having struggled to make a significant impression in her races to date, but has been far from disgraced in two starts this term and could be improving as she gains experience.

In her latest run, the daughter of Supremacy ran well for a long way before struggling to find a finishing kick in the closing stages. It was her first try over a mile-and-a-quarter and she may be able to improve on that effort here. Although she was beaten six-and-a-half-lengths by the older winner, Mythical Bird, who finished in front, has since boosted the form by putting in a competitive effort from an 8lb higher mark in a higher class contest, and Gnocchi was only a couple of lengths behind runner-up Ammoony.

Purchased for €85,000 as a Book 1 yearling before changing hands for 60,000gns as breeze-up, Gnocchi has shown glimpses of ability and could be capable of showing further progression, making her one to consider at this level under Sean Levey with first-time cheekpieces applied.

Making his return from a 251-day break, the John and Rhys Flint-trained Vape could enjoy a successful reappearance in familiar surroundings from a mark of 62 under 7lb claiming Charlie Tucker. He has gone well fresh often in the past and has plenty of course experience in his favour, having won three times at Chepstow previously.

Only 3lb higher than his latest success, the nine-year-old is on a mark from which he can be competitive as he steps back up in trip, and showed good form over 7f last summer when beaten only a length at Salisbury. If ready on his seasonal return, the son of Dark Angel can make his presence felt as he seeks a tenth success.

Likeable gelding Shoot To Kill returned to some form when third of 14 runners at Roscommon in his latest start, improving plenty on his previous runs this year. He's now 10lb lower than his last handicap success twelve months ago, having landed a claimer at Gowran Park since, putting him in with solid claims at the weights if able to take a step forward from his recent outing. 

The experienced nine-year-old makes his 84th career start in this contest. He's no stranger to outrunning his odds, having often made the frame and won at big prices in the past, including at odds of 40-1 in a Brighton handicap when trained by Robyn Brisland. 

Under 5lb claiming Patrick McGettigan here, Shoot To Kill could be worth keeping the faith in and may be able to return to the winners' enclosure from a workable mark.

Gavin Cromwell-trained Stuntman Steve could be well treated from a mark of 112, despite being unable to win over fences as of yet. He has shaped with some promise in his two latest handicap starts and may fare better on a sounder surface with first-time cheekpieces applied from a lower rating.

The son of Getaway was in good form from spring through the summer last year, winning a handicap hurdle from a mark of 116 in June following a few creditable efforts which included a fifth-placed finish to Lord Erskine in Listed company.

Whilst he has appeared versatile in regards to ground conditions, all of his wins to date have been on good ground and this assignment could suit perfectly for a yard among the winners recently.

Making his first appearance following a gelding operation, Another Day Done could be worth keeping onside under Declan McDonogh in this extended mile-and-a-quarter handicap. He's 10lb higher than when winning convincingly at Dundalk in January but has since been able to put in a competitive effort from a 2lb higher mark and could take a step forward from his latest effort at Leopardstown.

A visor, which was equipped for the first time when the son of Sottsass shed his maiden tag earlier this year, replaces cheekpieces, which could spark enough improvement to allow him to pose a threat. He is on a workable rating based on his penultimate outing when beaten only a length-and-three-quarters by Dawn Flame on the all-weather, and could strip fitter for his return following a short break now as a gelding.
