Ross Millar looks back at the two juvenile Group One contests at the Irish Champions Festival at the Curragh on Sunday and shares his insight on Fallen Angel and Henry Longfellow, queries tactics employed by Amo Racing and gets the latest from Ed Bethell on one to note.
Moyglare Stud Stakes

The first two home Fallen Angel and Vespertilio pulled a long way clear of the rest.
On a weekend when many of the UK-based jockeys riding in Ireland faced criticism for their performances in the saddle, it was refreshing to see Danny Tudhope ride a straightforward race for more success on the Karl Burke-trained filly.
A good exit from the stalls enabled her to travel easily at the head of affairs alongside warm favourite Ylang Ylang, while Vespertilio was ridden closer to the pace than she had been in her previous starts. Tudhope started to wind the pace up with two furlongs to go and instantly had the measure of Ryan Moore on the disappointing favourite, but he momentarily looked a sitting duck for the strong-travelling runner-up who was delivered with a stealthy challenge from Billy Lee. A protracted duel looked assured but in truth only lasted half a furlong before Fallen Angel found another gear and powered away for an ultimately comfortable victory.
Dalham Hall Stud resident Too Darn Hot now has his first Group One winner as a sire (Focusonracing)
She has a wonderful ability to travel powerfully while relaxing and has both speed and stamina. I’m confident that the Guineas test at Newmarket will play to her strengths and she fully deserves her place at the head of the market.
Vespertilio ran a fine race in defeat and being ridden closer to the pace didn’t compromise her finishing effort. While this opens up options for her, it’s hard to envisage any scenario where she could reverse form with the winner.
Ylang Ylang was disappointing and, while I was confident before the race that she was opposable, she is clearly better than this.
Porta Fortuna looked less effective when ridden to stay an extra furlong. Speed is clearly her forte and I’d expect to see her dropped back in trip next time, while Red Viburnum ran with credit on only her second start. I’d expect connections to target a run-of-the-mill maiden now before being more ambitious next season.
Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes
Henry Longfellow wins the National Stakes (Photo: Healy Racing Ltd)
This race that lost a degree of its lustre with the last-minute withdrawal of red-hot favourite City Of Troy because of a slight change in the going description. Yet if spectators and punters thought his defection would make this a more competitive heat, they were wrong by some distance – about five lengths to be exact.
Henry Longfellow delivered a spectacular performance. Amo Raing pacemaker
Cuban Thunder set strong fractions at the front and was chased along by
Bucanero Fuerte, the first-choice here for those owners.
Ryan Moore was clearly content to sit just off the front pair and was always travelling smoothly aboard the eventual victor, with it being apparent a full three furlongs from home that there was only going to be one winner. Kevin Stott was getting visibly animated on Bucanero Fuerte while Moore was able to effortlessly move alongside. When asked to quicken the impressive son of Dubawi found plenty more and lengthened all the way to the line in the manner of a high-class colt.
He’d shown visible signs of immaturity when getting to the front on his previous starts; indeed I’d used that as my sole justification not to side with him in this, but here he looked far more polished, running straight and true with real intent.
"I thought he was very impressive," said Ryan Moore on Henry Longfellow
Henry Longfellow has a slightly elevated knee action so is likely to be better with a degree of cut in the ground, though in his post-race interview Aidan O’Brien was keen to emphasise that he was a horse possessing plenty of natural speed. To my eye he looks really special.
Amo Racing have now twice struggled to successfully deploy a pacemaker for Bucanero Fuerte; they got away with it in the Phoenix Stakes thanks to a smart and instinctive ride from Kevin Stott but here they were not so lucky. Setting a fast pace for a proven six-furlong performer on his first start at seven furlongs seemed a bizarre team tactic, and maybe in future they will feel they’d be better served by simply allowing their jockey to ride a race on instinct - especially in such a small field.
Given the overly strong early fractions I’d be reluctant to conclude that Bucanero Fuerte didn’t stay. It would be foolish to react hastily and question his merits now. His 2024 season will surely centre around the Commonwealth Cup, where he’d have leading claims.
Islandsinthestream ran honourably but simply isn’t up to this class. He’s sure to be well placed by shrewd connections to win some lesser pots.
Late Bloomer
Ed Bethell saddled his first Group One winner last weekend with Betfair Sprint Cup hero Regional (Photo: Mark Cranham / focusonracing.com)
Last year Ed Bethell nominated two late-bloomers for us and both James McHenry and Yorkshire have obliged by winning twice since.
Fresh from landing his first Group One as a trainer, he nominates an unraced filly that he’s excited about.
“I have a couple of nice fillies that are coming to hand slowly but surely. Marianglas, a daughter of Almanzor, is certainly one I’m excited by. I’d love to get a run into her in October to ready her for a successful campaign next season.”
"I feel so sorry for him, but he's human and humans make mistakes." That was the verdict of ex-jockey and Racing TV pundit Ruby Walsh after jockey Stephen Connor mistook the 50-metres-out marker for the winning post and eased his mount down prematurely in the race that closed the 2026 Dublin Racing Festival, the Coolmore NH Sires Los Angeles Irish EBF Mares INH Flat Race - worth €59,000 to the winner.
The error allowed Moonverrin and Finny Maguire to regain the advantage and claim success in the Grade Two contest.
The stewards banned the jockey who made the mistake for 14 racedays on the back of the offence.

Brightedaysahead turned the tables on Lossiemouth to claim top honours in the 2026 Timeless Sash Windows Irish Champion Hurdle. The Willie Mullins-trained Lossiemouth had come finished in front when the pair met for the first time in Leopardstown’s December Hurdle late last month and she was the 4-6 favourite to confirm her superiority in their Dublin Racing Festival rematch.
However, Brighterdaysahead (11-4) was entitled to improve from what was her first start of the season following an autumn setback and took her revenge in the hands of Jack Kennedy.Lossiemouth’s stablemate El Fabiolo led the five-strong field for much of the two-mile journey, with Brighterdaysahead always his nearest pursuer while Paul Townend did not appear entirely happy on board the market leader racing down the back straight in third.
With El Fabiolo falling away, Lossiemouth did manage close the gap on Brighterdaysahead rounding the home turn, but Gordon Elliott’s mare finished the stronger in the testing conditions and was three and a quarter lengths in front at the line.

Majborough got his act together with a brilliant victory in the 2026 Ladbrokes Dublin Chase at Leopardstown!
Winner of the Irish Arkle at this meeting 12 months ago, the Willie Mullins-trained six-year-old has had his jumping issues since, with a bad mistake two from home possibly costing him victory in the Arkle at Cheltenham and he was also beaten on his first two starts of this season at Cork and Leopardstown.
However, the application of cheekpieces appeared to do the trick, with Majborough racing and jumping with enthusiasm from the off under Mark Walsh, who let him stride on in front heading down the back straight.
Queen Mother Champion Chase hero and 5-4 favourite Marine Nationale did his best to bridge the gap before the home turn, but while he and the rest of the chasing pack tired in the testing ground in the straight, 2-1 shot Majborough did not falter and passed the post with 19 lengths in hand.

Talk The Talk got up in the very last stride to win the 2026 Tattersalls Ireland Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown.
Joseph O’Brien’s charge had impressed in winning his first two starts over obstacles and looked set to complete the hat-trick in the Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown’s Christmas meeting before stumbling and falling after the final flight.
The five-year-old was the 3-1 favourite to reward those who kept the faith for his second attempt at Grade One success and he finished with a flourish in the hands of JJ Slevin to deny the front-running Ballyfad by a short head, with King Rasko Grey only half a length further behind in third.

Kaid d’Authie upstaged his stablemate Final Demand to land the 2026 Ladbrokes Novice Chase at Leopardstown.
Winner of five of his six previous starts and impressive in winning his first two starts over fences, Final Demand was all the rage to complete his hat-trick under Paul Townend as the 30-100 favourite.
The seven-year-old led his three rivals for much of the two-mile-five-furlong contest, but his jumping was entirely fluent and it was clear he had a real race on his hands when joined by fellow Willie Mullins-trained runner Kaid d’Authie (5-1) on the approach to the third fence from home.
Carrying the colours of JP McManus in the hands of Mark Walsh, Kaid d’Authie kicked clear before the home turn and found plenty on the run-in to beat the staying-on Western Fold by four and a quarter lengths, with Final Demand weakening to finish a disappointing last of three as the other Mullins runner, Jimmy Du Seuil, crashed out at the final obstacle.

Henri The Second made light work of the valuable Virgin Bet Heroes Handicap Hurdle for Paul Nicholls at Sandown.
The nine-year-old was the 9-4 favourite for the staying event, run for a first prize of £56,736, with a field of 11 in contention.
Under Harry Cobden, victory for the bay never looked in doubt and he strolled home on the bridle, with the runner-up nine lengths behind him.
“I’ve been ringing them all week saying ‘please run this hurdle race’,” Nicholls told Racing TV.
“It’s a £100,000 race, we need these types of races and we lost it two years ago. I’m so glad it was on because this was this horse’s Gold Cup.
“I suspect we’ll step him up in grade, as long as it’s heavy ground. We may look at Haydock for the Rendlesham, we’ll wait for the mud!”

Sixmilebridge maintained his flawless chasing record to claim the Virgin Bet Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown for Fergal O’Brien.
The seven-year-old was partnered by Kielan Woods as a 6-1 shot, and in a small field the complexion of the Grade One changed when Kitzbuhel, Willie Mullins’ 10-11 favourite, made an error early on and unshipped Paul Townend.
That left three contenders standing and having made all of the running, it was Sixmilebridge who strolled home to claim a decisive five-length triumph from Kala Conti having jumped soundly throughout.
