Roger and Harry Charlton’s
Jumbly begins her campaign at
Newbury on Saturday as she takes on the Group Three
Dubai Duty Free Stakes, live on Racing TV at 2.25pm.
The filly was a three-time winner last term, taking a maiden and a novice before lining up for the Group Two Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket and coming home fourth behind Hello You, Cachet and Oscula.
Following that performance she was entered in the Listed Radley Stakes and was a highly convincing four-and-three-quarter-length winner over the same course and distance as this weekend’s assignment.

Jumbly was an impressive winner at Newbury in October “Jumbly is in great form and we were delighted with her last year,” said Harry Charlton.
“She didn’t handle the dip at Newmarket in the Rockfel and just got a little bit behind the hardier runners like Hello You and Cachet and didn’t quite catch them up.
“We then went back to Newbury and it was heavy and we didn’t think she would want soft, but she showed she has an incredible mind and a great attitude and she really knuckled down and won well.
“We’re excited to get back on a sounder surface and it will guide us to what trip and what level we’re running at for the rest of the year.”
He added: “She’ll stay a mile and Thistle Bird, her dam, was best over 10 furlongs, but started at a mile.
“So it’s not proper stamina, but it’s enough to say she’ll stay a mile and after that we’ll see.
“She’s a really lovely mover, so I wouldn’t say ground will be important.”
Jane Chapple-Hyam’s
Heat Of The Moment will be tested at Group level for the first time having only been seen once on track so far.
The filly was an impressive winner on her sole start, taking a Yarmouth novice by two and a half lengths for owner-breeder Kirsten Rausing in October.
That performance was on good to soft ground, however, and Chapple Hyam is hoping there will be enough cut for the daughter of Bobby’s Kitten.
“I want her to turn up but I want some give in the ground,” he said.
“I wouldn’t want to run her on good to firm, so we’ll see what happens weather-wise.
“I’m more hopeful than confident, because this is just her second start, but I’m very much looking forward to her this season and seeing how she gets on.
“She’s very much a quiet achiever, she does everything nicely. You never know she’s in the gallop and then all of a sudden she pops her head in front – she’s one of those that when she gets on the racecourse, you’ll see a good display.”
Also in action is Richard Fahey’s Barbanera, a bay daughter of Showcasing who ran three times last term and capped her season with third place in the Listed Bosra Sham Fillies’ Stakes over six furlongs at Newmarket.
“Barbanera will need to really step up on what she has done, but she has come to hand and we are really pleased with her,” the trainer said.
“She ran well at Newmarket in October and got a bit of black type, so we’ll see what happens, but she has worked nicely.”
The winner of the Bosra Sham was Richard Hannon’s Symphony Perfect, who will cross paths with Fahey’s filly again.
Symphony Perfect had an active two-year-old campaign when running 11 times and winning twice alongside several placings.
“Her work has been very good,” said Hannon. “She got better and better last year. She had a busy year but I am very happy with her and I think she will run a big race.”
John and Thady Gosden’s Shaara won a one-mile maiden at Yarmouth in October and will represent owner-breeder Shadwell Stud.
“She’s been very well so far, we’ve made an entry for the French Guineas and she won well last year on her only start,” said Angus Gold, Shadwell’s racing manager.
“She’s potentially a decent filly, we’ve just got to see if she’s up for something like this at this stage of the year or if we’ve got to start more slowly.
“I think she’s going to learn a lot as she’s only had one run and we’ll also know a lot more about her after it – it’s a learning curve for everybody.”
Andrew Balding runs Majestic Glory, a Frankel filly who won the Group Three Sweet Solera last year beating Charlie Appleby’s likely favourite Wild Beauty.
Of the latter, who was a Grade One winner in Canada in September before finishing fifth in the Fillies’ Mile, Appleby told the Godolphin website: “Wild Beauty’s preparation has gone well and the track at Newbury will suit her better than the Rowley Mile.
“We feel that she didn’t particularly handle the course in the Fillies’ Mile and are looking at using this as a springboard to the French 1,000 Guineas.”
Archie Watson’s Nazanin is also already a Group Three winner having claimed the Firth Of Clyde Fillies’ Stakes last year, with Charlie Fellowes’ Eve Lodge victorious at the same level when taking the Sirenia Stakes in September.
Roger Varian’s Carol Ann, Clive Cox’s Benefit and Martyn Meade’s Adelaise complete the field of 12.
Gordon Elliott hopes stable star Brighterdaysahead and some of his talented novice hurdlers can help his team kick off this year’s Cheltenham Festival in style, after a disappointing four-day campaign at the Home of Jump Racing in 2025.
The County Meath based trainer had to wait until the last of The Festival’s 28 races last year to register a winner.
But with a series of high-profile winners this season, Elliott is hoping he can put the frustrations of 11 months ago behind him.
Reflecting on last year's Festival, Elliott said: “It was hard for me but it was hard for my staff too. The horses were brilliant. We had a number of seconds and placed in big races – we just didn’t get the bounce of the ball.
“And in racing, soccer, rugby that’s the same – you’ve got to keep your head going. But as hard as it was for me, for all my staff who were putting in all the hours it was harder for them. The horses didn’t run badly, we just didn’t get the bounce of the ball.
“When you look at this season everything is bouncing right for us. That’s sport. You just put those days behind you but that’s what makes it better when you win.
“In this game you take nothing for granted. It’s day by day. We’re very lucky to have the horses we have and hopefully we’ll go to Cheltenham and have a few winners. That’s what we’re all dreaming about.
“It just shows, last year we had to wait for the last race. We hit the crossbar umpteen times with seconds, thirds, fourths. On another week we could have three or four winners very easy and you’d have gone home saying you’d had a great week but it’s sport and you’ve got to keep your head up and keep going to the next day.”
This year will be the 10th anniversary of one of Elliott’s greatest achievements, winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Don Cossack. And although his office is littered with memorabilia from some of his great triumphs, there is nothing from that day in March 2016.
Elliott laughs: “All the good ones are in my house. All the Grade Ones are in the house, in my kitchen. Every morning, breakfast, lunch and dinner, before I go to bed I’m looking at them!
“I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since Don Cossack. In a way when you look at the pictures there’s more grey hairs and extra holes on the belt but it doesn’t seem like it. We’ve had a lot of good days and bad days since it but it’s a day we’ll never forget.”
Alongside Brighterdaysahead, Elliott has readied a strong team for Prestbury Park and tells Lisa O'Neill more about the likes of Romeo Coolio, Ballyfad, El Cairos, Teahupoo, Honesty Policy, Skylight Hustle, Western Form, Oldschool Outlaw and Wodhooh.

Constitution Hill is not guaranteed a run in the SBK Road To Cheltenham Novice Stakes at Southwell on Friday night following a random ballot on Sunday.
Nicky Henderson’s 2023 Champion Hurdle winner is scheduled to make his Flat debut on the Nottinghamshire track’s Friday Night Live card, having fallen in three of his last four starts over obstacles.
The nine-year-old was one of 32 entries for the £40,000 contest, although it later transpired Thankyou Baroness does not qualify, and the maximum field for the race will either be 12 or 14 depending on available stabling capacity and whether other races on the card divide.
With a ballot number of 16, Constitution Hill needs two of those ahead of him in the elimination sequence not to be declared to get into a field of 14, or four if the race is capped at 12 runners.
Henderson said on Saturday there was “no plan B or plan C” for his Seven Barrows superstar – and speaking on Racing TV’s Luck on Sunday programme ahead of the ballot, he was again hoping Constitution Hill would make the cut.
He said: “We hatched this plan some time ago and it would be a serious backfire if he didn’t get in – I’d be lost as to what we’re going to do next.
“We’ll cross that bridge (when we come to it). The whole thing has been terrific and fair play to Martin Cruddace and ARC (Arena Racing Company) for going ahead with it, but at the same time it would be very sad for us and them if it didn’t come off.
“It’s created a lot of interest, which I can only think is good for the game. It involves a lot of talking and games, but on the other hand, the day that these things don’t get you excited is probably the day to give it up anyway.
“We’re very lucky that we’ve got these horses that create a lot of public interest and I’ve got to say I love it.”
Constitution Hill remains in the mix for the Unibet Champion Hurdle on the opening day of next month’s Cheltenham Festival and Henderson has been keeping his training routine varied.
He added: “He’s been jumping and he’s probably confused.com – one morning it’s starting stalls and the next day it’s hurdles!
“He’s having a lovely time, it’s kept him amused and he worked on Saturday and was great.”

Multiple Grade One winner Impaire Et Passe produced a remarkable turn of foot to make a winning return in the Grade Two Red Mills Chase, forming part of a four-timer for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend at Gowran Park.
The Grand National entrant had been in the news this week having taken part in a racecourse gallop with stablemate Kopek Des Bordes in which he came off second best.
He paid quite the compliment to Willie Mullins’ Arkle contender, coming from last to first in style to justify 4-9 favouritism by a length and a quarter from Sa Fureur.
“It was always going to be a tactical race and it was just a case of when the others would pull the trigger (pace-wise). I was in the wrong position but luckily was on the best horse,” said Townend.
“He was good and brave at the second-last when we were trapping on and he was the class horse of the race. He had won five Grade Ones so it is no secret how good he is.”
