Johnny Ward's Irish Angle: Snowfall has a "massive chance" at the Curragh

Our Irish racing expert has five fancies - including one chalked up at 33-1 - for the racing action at the Curragh on Sunday which will be shown live on Racing TV.

2.00 Curragh: Snowfall at 11-8 with Bet365

A filly with a pedigree to die for. Snowfall is a, sadly rare, Deep Impact-bred to race in this part of the world, out of Best In The World.

She clearly wanted further after racing over an extended five furlongs on debut and she gets it here. She must have a massive chance.

3.10 Curragh: Napa Valley at 7-4 with Bet365

Generally, Aidan O’Brien-trained Galileo-breds do not win first time out and the performance of this one might be an outlier in many regards. He hacked up at Leopardstown, with runner-up Aztec Parade beaten a short head in a big-field Naas maiden since.

The strapping Napa Valley is a half-brother to Tiggy Wiggy, but he has plenty of stamina and looks potentially high-class.

3.45 Curragh: Alligator Alley at a general 11-2

Battle Of Jericho won this for Aidan O’Brien and the Classic generation in 2018. I am wary of backing youngsters in handicaps at this stage of the season, but this is a poor renewal of the race and Alligator Alley looks a bit of a class apart for Joseph O’Brien.

An out-and-out five-furlong horse, he shaped well on both his starts at the Curragh, and warmed up for this with an excellent effort at Naas. He also gets a 6lb age allowance.

5.15 Curragh: Magnetic North at a general 33-1

Magnetic North might be best ridden prominently, having won a big handicap from the front last year, so it seems unfair to judge him too deeply on his comeback here, since he does not seem to stay a mile and a half.

He was ridden with more restraint and looked badly in need of the run that day and the rest of these are a bit of a mixed bag, plus he is dangerously weighted.

5.45 Curragh: Presto at 9-1 with SkyBet

A cracking race this, with Willie Mullins in form and providing major problems if you want to back anything else, such as Presto.

I really liked this horse’s handicap debut here last time when he looked like one with plenty more to offer.

For all that this is tougher, he is worth following.
