Johnny Ward's Irish Angle: Raise a glass to Strongbowe at the Curragh

Sun 9 Aug 2020

Our Irish racing expert reveals his best bets for the racing action at Downpatrick and the Curragh on Sunday.

2.20 Downpatrick: Jelona at 2-1 with Bet365

This Milan mare is out of an unraced sister to stablemate Jett, who is also a half-sister to Jezki.

She was promising in bumpers and receives 8lb from What Wonders Weave here, so ought to prove hard to beat.

3.30 Downpatrick: Gone Racing at a general 5-2

This horse won snugly at Tramore last time out and the handicapper has been pretty fair.

With two last-time-out winners taking him on, he is not as short as I expected, and with his stable having a sensational run, he is worth siding with again.

4.40 Downpatrick: Knot On Time at a general 9-2

Paul Nolan makes an approximate round trip of 600km to Downpatrick with one runner, Knot On Time.

This five-year-old was a massive price on his hurdling debut here last time where he ran quite a remarkable race, having looked at one stage like he may be tailed off. He can go one better on Sunday.

5.55 Curragh: Strongbowe at a general 8-1

When interviewed prior to this one’s handicap debut, Paddy Twomey gave the impression he felt the Siyouni-bred was better than his mark.

Sent off the 11-4 favourite on that occasion, he was trapped wide and travelled well before eventually tiring in the straight behind subsequent winner Centroid.

He is forgiven that effort, and with a tongue tie tried, he is of major interest now.
