Johnny Ward's Irish Angle: Battleoverdoyen remains a "formidable prospect"

This has been an uplifting week in Ireland with lockdown continuing but smashing jumping cards all week, from Wexford to Punchestown, to Down Royal to Cork on Sunday.

There’s always a lively atmosphere at Down Royal’s big meeting but this year is a little different. Despite Willie Mullins sidestepping the card in the main, it’s a superb offering on Saturday. Be lucky.

3.00 Down Royal: Battleoverdoyen at a general 7-1

You have to oppose Samcro and Easy Game if you want to back Battleoverdoyen, but he has lots of class and looks well worth stepping back in trip here.

He remains a formidable prospect at this level, for all that he needs to finish his races better.

3.35 Down Royal: Massey's Wood at a general 25-1

Barry Connell has run 22 horses so far with three winners and five placed.

Massey’s Wood is fascinating here. He was eye-catching behind Allaho in January and showed good stamina when winning a decent maiden hurdle over three miles in 2018.

Stamina does not look assured for the well-fancied Paranoid, and I'm taking him on with the selection.
