In-form Benbatl delivers again at Meydan for Godolphin

Thu 1 Feb 2018

Benbatl followed up his victory at Meydan three weeks ago with an even more authoritative display in the Group Two Al Rashidiya.

Settled in fourth behind a sedate pace, Oisin Murphy had everything covered.

With two furlongs to go, Murphy asked him for his effort and Benbatl, a Royal Ascot winner last year, put the race to bed within a matter of strides to give Saeed bin Suroor another winner at the Carnival.

Bay Of Poets stayed on for second, with Bravo Zolo third to provide Godolphin with a one-two-three.

Murphy said: "He gave me a very good feel. Credit to Saeed and the team as he was in great shape.

"I got a nice trip and I was on a very good horse. He's got a great turn of foot - basically he's very good.

"Horses like this make a young jockey's career. I'm only 22 and there isn't a jockey in the world who wouldn't want to ride a horse like that."

Jungle Cat prevailed in the Al Fahidi Fort to give James Doyle his first winner of the Carnival.

Charlie Appleby's six-year-old came powerfully down the middle of the track to beat Janoobi, with Dream Castle third.

Appleby told Racing UK: "I'm delighted with him and delighted for James - he's a real team player.

"We thought there'd be more pace on but he used to be a sprinter. Seven furlongs is his game now, though.

"Saying that, I think we'll have to come back to six just through lack of options as he doesn't stay a mile."
