Racing TV presenter Angus McNae tipped up four winners at odds of 11-1, 4-1, 4-1 and 9-4 on Dubai World Cup day last year and marks your card for the action at Meydan on Saturday. The Dubai World Cup Meeting is a highlight of the year for me and this year will once again be a magnificent occasion.
My task is to make a profit from a starting point of £20. Before I give you the various combinations that I have worked out, it is worth remembering a few punting maxims when it comes to the racing at
Meydan on this night.
1. Early pace and a prominent position on the dirt is key.
2. The rail on the dirt is Golden, if only because it is the shortest way round this sharp track.
3. Turf races tend to be steadily run, and late pace is vital. It is hard to make up ground from too far back which, to a large degree, is a function of pace.
4. Don’t presume International raiders just have to turn up to win; Carnival form is very strong. Last year, six winners on World Cup Night had raced on Super Saturday at Meydan.
Here are my selections followed by some combinations you might like to try.
Muntazah broke a long-standing track record here on Super Saturday and is an impressive dirt horse.
Heavy Metal won this last year and shaped very well having missed the break behind Muntazah last time. He could spring a surprise if breaking better.
Blue Point will be all the rage here, but I think he is vulnerable in a strongly run, six-furlong contest, whereas over 5f he is almost unbeatable.
Stormy Liberal is a class act at Santa Anita and was narrowly beaten in this race last year and makes each-way appeal.
A very impressive winner of the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial and then was beaten in the Guineas itself where connections tried to settle him in behind the leaders rather than letting him stride on and use his early speed.
Frankie Dettori takes over and, from stall 1, he will surely let this horse bowl along in front. If so, he will take some catching.
The American raiders can dominate this race.
X Y Jet is my choice after his narrow defeat in this last year.
He has more pace than his main rival Roy H who may get a bad trip from stall 1. Intake X Y Jet to make all.
Dream Castle is unbeaten in three starts at this year’s Carnival. He has been transformed since being gelded and united with Christophe Soumillon and has a sharp turn of foot.
Impressive when winning the Jebel Hatta, he can lower the colours of Almond Eye who is a brilliant filly on firm ground in Japan, but she has never travelled before and at 5-4 she makes no appeal.
He will be favourite but should win. He took his prep run for this despite finding trouble in a steadily run race and given that he did not have a hard race, he should be spot on here and will outclass his rivals.
This is a tactically fascinating race. It is tough to split North America, Thunder Snow and Cappezano, but I think Cappezano will have a tactical edge from stall 2 and he is the biggest price of the three at 5-1.
This is going to be a superb race, the race to the first bend being crucial.
How to bet £20 on Dubai World Cup day at Meydan:
Dream Castle, Muntazah and
Old Persian - £3 win treble.
Stormy Liberal and X Y Jet - £1 each-way double.
Old Persian and Dream Castle - £3 win double.
Muntazah and Old Persian - £2 win double.
Walking Thunder, Capezzano, Old Persian, Dream Castle and X Y Jet – £2 each-way accumulator.
Good Luck!
