4.40 Nottingham: Destinado
I argued last time that this gelding might just be acclimatising to life on these shores after joining Tony Carroll’s yard from France. He didn’t win but definitely showed his first form for the yard.
It was over this trip last year that he was runner up in a handicap at Lyon off a mark of 73. He has dropped to a mark off 52 and this is the first time he has stepped up to 12f this season.
Perhaps significantly he went off at single-figure odds (trainer had others in the race) so clearly there was some level of expectation. He had been massive prices when previously running poorly.
Emma Taff claims 5lb against other inexperienced apprentices. She has found winners hard to come by but has had a good number of second places and doesn’t seem to disappoint when riding anything that isn’t a rank outsider.

7.45 Leicester: Mumma Mac
Looks the most promising among the three-year-olds in this handicap and hopefully has enough improvement to beat some exposed older fillies.
Quite a well-bred filly, she has been brought along patiently and put up her best performance last time when running in a handicap for the first time. She stayed on nicely on that occasion to be third and the second-placed horse has since won again.
A 1lb drop looks generous and she is more than ready for this step up in trip. With William Buick taking over in the saddle, she has a lot going for her.
9.00 Hamilton: Water Of Leith
There are few jockeys riding as well as Connor Beasley at present and he has done me a few favours recently, so hopefully he can work the oracle with this habitual slow starter who ran well enough in a 0-80 last time.
Water Of Leith had dropped to a low mark now and might be well suited by the stiff climb at Hamilton. If Beasley can avoid him getting too detached early on, then he could easily pick these lot up.
Rebecca Menzies has not managed to win with him as yet but doesn’t often fail with recruits from other yards.
