Horse racing tips: Dave Nevison's best bets for Saturday

Top tipster Dave Nevison has three selections at Perth and Newbury, live on Racing TV, plus one in Ripon's feature race of the year.

1.20 Newbury: Definite

Two three-year-olds from top yards dominate this opening handicap, but Definite ran much the best last time out and could be the most progressive.

Ralph Beckett’s son of Kingman was runner-up in a three-horse race when last seen but was defeated by a rival who looks Group class, so he certainly wasn’t disgraced.

He won a competitive 0-70 handicap in good style over this trip, and under this rider, at Haydock prior to that and still looks well treated off a 6lb higher mark.

If the addition of a tongue strap also brings out more improvement, then he could be very well handicapped indeed.

2.50 Ripon: Snash

Snash has won two of his past three outings, which both came over this trip, and it now seems confirmed that he excels as a sprinter, despite an extended campaign to develop him into a 7f/mile performer.

He has only gone up 8lb from the first of those two victories and still appears a well handicapped horse who may well have further improvement in him, which can’t be said for some of his rivals here who are generally more exposed over this trip.

It is certain this contest will be strongly run, which will suit the selection, and he has a favourable draw in stall 14.

Backing a hold-up sprinter in a decent sized field is always a fraught experience, but I believe it is worth chancing Snash to get the breaks in Ripon’s feature race of the year.

3.05 Perth: Idilico

This seven-year-old looks an each-way bet against some interesting Gordon Elliott-trained contenders at the top and bottom of the weights, as well as other dangers in a competitive field.

Dianne Sayer’s five-year-old warmed up for this contest with a good run on the flat last time out, which should have brought him along nicely.

He has been gradually coming down the weights, despite running creditably on most occasions, and is now on a rating just a pound above his latest win, so is clearly well enough handicapped to win a race soon.

Idilico will be held up off the pace, which is predicted to be strong here, and that fact he is set to get a race run to suit is the final factor in making him the selection.

4.15 Perth: Galata Bridge

Galata Bridge hasn’t quite lived up to expectations over hurdles as yet, but there is definitely still time, and he is capable of landing a good prize here.

He was rated in the mid 90’s when racing on the flat for Sir Michael Stoute, and has done little wrong over obstacles plus is with a very good operator in Dr Richard Newland.

The five-year-old may have just needed the run at Market Rasen when finishing a close-up fourth in a more competitive event than this following an absence of 54 days and was too far out of his ground on that occasion.

He is also 2lb better off with Wolf Prince here, and that should be enough to enable him to turn the tables on that rival.

I am expecting him to be well backed, but hopefully he will justify that market strength.
