Funny Kid set to swerve Good Friday defence

Christophe Ferland has ruled out bringing Funny Kid back to Lingfield to defend his crown in the All-Weather Marathon Championships on Good Friday.

The French trainer plans instead to prepare the five-year-old entire for a turf campaign.

The son of Lemon Drop Kid won a Group Three contest at Longchamp in April, following his Lingfield triumph, and has not raced since finishing fifth to The Queen’s Call To Mind in the Belmont Gold Cup in New York in June.

“He’s doing fine but he’s not going to run over the winter,” said Ferland.

“He had a break, so he’s going to start for the Flat season next year.

“He’s not going back to Lingfield. He’s just coming back and will not be in full training in time.”

However, Ferland has not ruled out having a representative of some sort at Lingfield on April 19 next year.

“Maybe by the time of February we can get a nice one to run in one of the races,” he said.

“We have got plenty of horses to run over the winter, so we might choose one later on.”
