Katie Midwinter's Friday tips: Six selections at Goodwood and Galway

The former Tipstar champ Katie Midwinter takes aim at Glorious Goodwood and Galway, with both bumper meetings live on Racing TV.

French raider Annabel's Ghost is an interesting contender on his second run for trainer Mickael Seror in this extended two-and-a-half-mile staying handicap. 

The five-year-old gelding caught the eye in defeat when fifth in the Ascot Stakes when last seen, making up ground late on to be beaten only three lengths at odds of 40-1 under Pierre-Charles Boudot. He was staying on strongly in the closing stages, proving his stamina capabilities, and, from only a 1lb higher mark, could give another good account of himself. 

Things didn't pan out completely in his favour at Royal Ascot, but he still emerged with a huge amount of credit and makes each-way appeal in his return to action here.

Likeable gelding Tribal Chief has been unlucky on multiple occasions in big field handicaps, but this could finally be his chance to land a big pot for local trainer David Menuisier, and he has course-and-distance winning form in his favour. He's only 3lb higher than his last winning mark and on an unchanged rating of 93 from his previous efforts this season.

The son of Sioux Nation finished an eye-catching third in the Lincoln at Doncaster on reappearance, before matching that finishing position with a placed effort in the Victoria Cup at Ascot.

Whilst he'll need some luck in running and a good start to be able to return to the winners' enclosure in these familiar surroundings, Tribal Chief is well-treated at the weights, has been gaining plenty of valuable experience, and should be able to pose a threat if getting the gaps late on.

Ancient Rome won the Chesterfield Cup on stable debut for Charlie Hills here three years ago, before going on to land the valuable Mint Millions Stakes on the Kentucky Downs.

He's winless since, but has dropped from a rating of 110 to a workable 93 as a result, and, with course form, could fare better than in previous outings this season.

The experienced seven-year-old is another runner in this competitive handicap that needs things to fall right for him, but if he's able to enjoy a favourable trip, he should put in a competitive performance from a workable mark under David Egan at the early 33-1 available.

Winner of the 2023 Vintage Stakes at this meeting, Haatem has gone on to place in two Classics since, as well as landing two Group Three successes plus a Listed win in the Wolferton Stakes.

So far this year, things haven't panned out well for the likeable five-year-old, but this could be a feasible opportunity for him to get off the mark for the season. He was entitled to improve for his return to action here in May but didn't get any run when joint-favourite at Royal Ascot last month in a race worth putting a line through.

This is only his third run of the season and he should be fresh enough to be at his best in this 1m1f contest. He's a talented performer on his day with Group One credentials at his very best, and holds solid claims for Richard Hannon.

Top weight Persian Spring is one to note on handicap debut for Richard Hannon under Jamie Spencer from a mark of 88. He was beaten on debut at Newmarket but improved for the experience to shed his maiden tag in a competitive 15-runner race on the Knavesmire.

In his penultimate start at York, the son of Persian Force, who was purchased for 100,000gns as a yearling, beat subsequent five-length winner Clash Of Hearts, as well as Rlasthope, who went on to finish third at Epsom before getting off the mark at Southwell, and The Ginger Kid, a winner since.

He didn't get any sort of run in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, but on his previous form should be able to put in a good performance in this contest and has scope for plenty of further improvement.

A half-brother to Group Three-winning Beauty Inspire, Persian Spring remains unexposed and could bounce back to form in only his fourth career start at 12-1.

Equipped with a first-time visor under 5lb-claiming Michael Kenneally, Moonovercloon could go one better than when a close second to Battleoverdoyen in this race two years ago. He's 3lb lower rated this time around in his second start for Declan Queally, and should fare better than in his hurdling return following a 244-day break last month.

The experienced nine-year-old missed the cut for the Midlands National at Kilbeggan earlier this month, but could find redemption at Galway in this competitive handicap, making appeal at the weights with proven form in the race.
