12.10 Auteuil: Whetstone

The final meeting of the year at Auteuil has drawn an unexpected star with Whetstone making her chasing debut, having carried all before her this autumn in hurdle races for three-year-olds.

This sister of dual “Grand Steeple” winner So French and top hurdler Device is an imposing filly, who has been spectacular over hurdles. She should be even better now over bigger obstacles.

12.20 Taunton: Diese Des Bieffes

Escapes a penalty for his comfortable Fontwell win, as that was a novices' hurdle for conditional jockeys.

The form of that race does not look too bad as the runner-up that day went on to again finish second at Kempton on Monday. The Nicky Henderson trained four-year-old can make the most of the weight concession he gets from penalised top of the ground performer Challico.

1.50 Taunton: Lovely Job

This dual chase winner looks capable of defying top weight in this novices’ limited handicap chase for the in-form Fergal O’Brien.

The form of his last run when second to Vintage Clouds in a similar race at Aintree, where he was outrun on the flat after the final three fences were omitted, looks good in this race and the handicapper has left him on the same mark.

It is a small field and Lovely Job likes to get on with things, so Noel Fehily should be able to get a comparatively easy lead. We know Lovely Job stays this trip as his two chase successes have been achieved over three miles.

8.15 Newcastle: Choral Clan

This likeable six-year-old may not have won as many races as he should have during his career (he has won five times but finished runner-up on 12 occasions) but he is a horse I have followed over the past couple of seasons I think he will be suited by this straight Tapeta track.

The conditions for this claimer are a little unusual, in that it is restricted to 0-70 horses, and currently having a BHA mark of 69 makes him one of the best in at these weights.
