Tom Marquand brought up his 1,000th winner in Britain aboard Five Towns at Windsor on Monday evening.
The 25-year-old, who has built up a reputation for being one of the best jockeys around, had already reached that figure in Britain and Ireland but has now reached the milestone on home soil having successfully linked up with a filly appropriately trained by his boss, William Haggas.
Marquand began his career with Richard Hannon in 2014 and only a year later was crowned champion apprentice at the tender age of 18.
His first Group-level success came in 2017 when Anna Nerium landed Salisbury’s Dick Poole Stakes, but he would have to wait until 2020 for his first Group One victory which fittingly came in Australia where Marquand spent plenty of his time honing his craft.
He earned the moniker ‘Aussie Tom’ for his exploits in the Southern Hemisphere and partnered the Haggas-trained Addeybb to three big-race victories in Australia before also combining for Champion Stakes glory at Ascot in 2020.
That triumph came shortly after Marquand landed his first Classic success, as he proved an able late deputy aboard Joseph O’Brien’s Galileo Chrome in the St Leger at Doncaster.
Earlier this year he wrote himself into the Royal Ascot history books when steering Haggas’ Desert Hero to win the King George V Stakes. It was the first time the King and Queen’s colours had been carried to victory at the Royal meeting since the death of the late Queen.
Marquand married fellow jockey Hollie Doyle in 2022, with the pair sitting second and third respectively behind William Buick in this season’s jockeys’ championship.
“It’s fantastic,” Marquand told Sky Sports Racing.
“It takes a lot of horses and lot of people to ride 1,000 winners, so I’m very fortunate to have had that support.”

Fifth in the Irish 1,000 Guineas after just one win in a maiden on this day 12 months ago, Paddy Twomey’s daughter of Sioux Nation was adding her third straight success since when obliging as the 2-1 joint-favourite in this Group Two event.
It was a win that gave Twomey a third triumph in the race in the last five years, but that was eclipsed by his jockey Lee who was lifting the trophy for a fifth time in six years.
Twomey ruled City Of Memphis out of a trip to Royal Ascot next month but there will be other opportunities to grow her CV as the year goes on.
“I like this race as it is a suitable one for the type of filly we train,” said Twomey.
“This filly came from Katie Walsh as a breezer and, to be fair, the breeze-ups have been very good to us and I came from that sphere myself.
“Alan (O’Flynn, member of the family syndicate) said to target the breeze-ups from the get-go and he has been very lucky and is getting his reward.
“I actually had her in the Guineas in the winter (of 2024-25), took her out in April and then put her back in at the cost of €50,000, to get €15,000 for finishing fifth but thankfully he forgave me! She is a classy filly and it worked out today.
“After her Guineas run, I said that we’d leave her alone until her four-year-old year and I’d say she is now a Group One filly.
“She won’t go to Ascot but I’ll be looking at races like the Prix Maurice De Gheest, Prix Rothschild, the Matron, as well as the Breeders’ Cup Mile, those kind of races.”

While Ryan Moore couldn't land Group 1 honours aboard Minnie Hauk in the Tattersalls Gold Cup nor True Love in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas on Sunday, it was still a good weekend at the Curragh for the top jockey that opened a window on plenty to look forward to given his successes on exciting young prospects such as Sergei Diaghilev and Sun Goddess as well as progressive three-year-old Causeway and Classic winner Gstaad.

Almaqam registered the top-level success Ed Walker had been craving with an utterly brilliant display in the Tattersalls Gold Cup.
Often left despairing over ground conditions with his star middle-distance performer, who ended last season by finishing third behind Calandagan and Ombudsman in the Champion Stakes, Walker headed into the lion’s den of the Curragh for the five-year-old’s first outing of the campaign and was duly rewarded.
Sent off 13-2 in the hands of Kieran Shoemark, the bay’s rider was bullish from the off as he rolled forward and got his mount in the prime position to accelerate for home in the straight.
He then advertised every ounce of his class to lead home an all-British one-two-three, with George Scott’s Bay City Roller two lengths behind in second and Roger Varian’s Saddadd, Almaqam’s half-brother, in third.
As well as it being Almaqam’s first strike in Group One company, it was Shoemark’s first since Friendly Soul’s Prix de l’Opera triumph on Arc day in 2024 and a first for Walker since Makarova’s Abbaye triumph on the same Parisian afternoon.
As a result of the victory Almaqam is now 6-1 for the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot with Coral.
Walker said: “Kieran was absolutely brilliant on him and has really got to know him. He is a horse who needs waking up and engaging, as he is so laid-back. I thought he gave him a peach of a ride.
“Fair play to the horse, as he hadn’t run for a long time and he dug deep. It is a sigh of relief too, as I have banged on about this horse for long enough now so it is great to finally do it. People were probably bored with me talking about him and not producing, so hopefully this is his year and we could aim high now.
“This is a seriously tough division and it won’t be easy wherever we go but he has bagged a big one now. This is my first winner in Ireland so at least I can come back with some confidence.”
It was Aidan O’Brien’s Minnie Hauk who was sent off the 4-6 favourite, but last year’s dual Oaks winner failed to land a blow under Ryan Moore, finishing a well held fifth.
O’Brien said: “They jumped, went for three furlongs and Ryan gave her a chance but then the pace went out of the race completely. Ryan ended up at the back of a mile-and-a-half filly so had no chance.
“We’ll see what the lads want to do but Royal Ascot is very possible (Prince Of Wales’s Stakes). She wants an even end-to-end mile and a quarter to be competitive so we are putting a line through today.”

Precise followed in the footsteps of last year’s winner Lake Victoria by leaving Newmarket disappointment in the past to land the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas in decisive fashion.
Sent off favourite for the opening fillies Classic of the season despite a less than ideal preparation, a lack of fitness ultimately told on the Rowley Mile as Wayne Lordan and True Love stormed to 1000 Guineas glory.
Jettisoned by Ryan Moore who switched to the Newmarket winner and 4-6 favourite for the Curragh equivalent, it proved a different story this time around for the daughter of Starspangledbanner who was the mount of Lordan and sent off 4-1 to add to her impressive juvenile haul.
With True Love following the pace set by Charlie Appleby’s raider Abashiri amongst the cluster on the far rail, it looked like Moore’s decision to ride the favourite would prove justified as she hit the front travelling well heading down to the furlong marker.
However, she had no answer to Precise’s blistering acceleration inside the final furlong as Aidan O’Brien’s charge claimed Classic redemption by two and a half lengths.
O’Brien, winning the race for a record-extending 12th time, said: “She really stepped forward today and Wayne gave her a beautiful ride.
“In Newmarket, Ryan was on the ‘wrong’ side and when he made his move, she got tired, needed the run and Ryan looked after her in the last half-furlong.
“Roger (Quinlan), who rides her every day, said this morning that she was a different filly than the one going to Newmarket. Wayne gave her a beautiful ride and we’re over the moon.
“It is very difficult on Ryan and we discussed riding arrangements before declaration time. It was very hard for him not to ride True Love and he didn’t ride her in Newmarket because we weren’t sure she would get a mile, but she did.
“Precise was only beaten five lengths at Newmarket, which isn’t that much for this type of filly but she is a serious one and is as good as we’ve had. It looks like she will have no problem going further.”
That opportunity to go further that O’Brien references could be at Epsom in two weeks time, with a tilt at the Betfred Oaks now under consideration after being cut to 7-2 by Paddy Power to successfully step up in trip to a mile and a half.
O’Brien added: “We were talking on the way to the races and Annemarie (wife) said how much stamina is in the pedigree and she is out of a really good and genuine Galileo mare.
“Obviously the lads will make the decision regarding running in the English Oaks so we’ll see how she comes out of today. There is a good chance she’ll run and Ryan (Moore) felt today that she was running to go to the Oaks.
“It is a very exciting and she has an incredible pedigree.”
