1. Anna Swan
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute. Jockey: Richard Kingscote.
Could this be a fairytale victory for Sir Michael Stoute in his last few weeks as a trainer?
Stoute has trained more than 35 individual Group-race winners for Cheveley Park, and this would no doubt prove one of the most memorable should Anna Swan maintain her unbeaten record.
The Almanzor filly does have stamina in her pedigree but has created a big impression winning her first two starts over seven furlongs, and there are no doubts about her staying a mile.
She has been given a rating of 90, and the form of her two wins does not look that strong, so she will need to step up on what she has shown so far, despite winning with plenty to spare on each occasion, although it has to be noteworthy that connections have decided to pitch her into this Group One company instead of option to run in the Group Three Oh So Sharp Stakes on the same card.
2. Ballet Slippers
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien. Jockey:
A beautifully bred filly by Dubwai out of Magical, and this youngster has shown plenty of promise at a lower level in three starts so far, including when making the most of a good opportunity at Ascot when last seen.
She made all there and appeared to relish the step up to a mile and was only narrowly denied by a potentially high-class newcomer prior to that when pulling five lengths clear of the third.
One slight concern is that she doesn’t have size and scope that some of her rivals possess, and
3. California Dreamer
Trainer: Adrian Murray. Jockey: David Egan.
The most experienced in the field with six starts under her belt,
is yet to win a race but has been faring respectably in Group company and went close in the Airlie Stud Stakes three starts ago.
She also wasn’t beaten far by Babouche and Camille Pissaro – who have both scored at Group One level since – at the Curragh in July and is entitled to strip fitter for her outing following a short break at the same track in September.
The way she stayed on towards the finish, and her pedigree, suggests an extra furlong here will be within reach and her experience edge should be advantageous.
She’s rated 101 which means, on official ratings, she isn’t that far behind some of her rivals here, but it will be disappointing if the leading protagonists, at least, don’t improve past her further based upon the form she has produced so far.
4. Desert Flower
Trainer: Charlie Appleby. Jockey: William Buick.
Unbeaten in three starts, despite showing signs of inexperience on each occasion, and took the step up to Group Two company in her stride when landing the Betfred May Hill Stakes last time out.
That looked a decent renewal on paper, and Godolphin’s filly wandered and idled once hitting the front, so was probably value for more than the winning margin suggests there.
William Buick also spoke highly of her afterwards, and his mount is a best-priced 10-1 for next year’s 1000 Guineas.
A couple of potential chinks in her armour; she’s never run on the Rowley Mile, so her greenness could catch her out at this level, especially in the dip, and connections have stressed she will be a better horse next year.
She’s the one to beat on the form she has produced thus far, though, and looks to have loads more to offer, especially over this trip as she appears to have bundles of speed, and is certainly bred for a mile.
5. Dreamy
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien.
6. January
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien.
7. Tabiti
Trainer: Ralph Beckett. Jockey: Rossa Ryan.
