David Simcock tempted by Prix de la Foret for Lightning Spear

Thu 30 Aug 2018

David Simcock is leaning towards dropping back down to seven furlongs for the Prix de la Foret with Lightning Spear before a trip to the Breeders’ Cup.

The seven-year-old has not raced over the trip since making his racecourse debut back in 2013, being campaigned at a mile save for one attempt at 10 furlongs in last year’s Coral-Eclipse.

Lightning Spear recently made his Group One breakthrough when winning the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and he does have the option of the Prix du Moulin over a mile on September 9.

Simcock said: “He is good and has been ticking along nicely. He has got lots of options. He is in the Prix du Moulin, but the likelihood is he will go to the Foret.

“We will keep all options open. He won’t do the Foret and Champions Day for the QEII, so it could well be he does the Foret then the Breeders’ Cup.”

Simcock could have a second contender for the Foret in Teppal, who won the French 1000 Guineas earlier in the year but disappointed at Royal Ascot last time out.

The Newmarket trained added: “Teppal is good and is training well. I’m really pleased with her. Her bloods were wrong before, but she has recovered and is very well.

“She is also in the Foret, but is also in the Sun Chariot the day before. It is something we’ve still got to discuss which race she goes for.”
