3.05 Ascot: Waterford Castle
Trainer George Boughey has obviously decided this maiden gelding is likely to improve for the step up to 12 furlongs as he had an entry in the King Edward VII as well as this, but it would seem sense has prevailed and he runs in this very competitive handicap instead.
Waterford Castle has been second in each of his four runs for this yard and those form figures might set alarm bells ringing, but I haven’t seen any issues and he has simply been up against some good horses.
The two extra furlongs might be a step too far on pedigree, but he hasn’t looked like he has been stopping for me and, although there are any number of lightly-raced progressive types in the field, Waterford Castle might be a value price to get in the frame at least.

4.50 Ascot: Moonfall
Being drawn 12 of 12 at Chester isn’t helpful, even if you have Ryan Moore doing the steering, and Moonfall was coming back from 10 months off when he ran last time.
The Boughey gelding was wide and out the back for most of the race, but stayed on really well to finish a relatively close up fifth without coming any sort of pressure.
His win in a Newbury maiden last season looked modest at the time, but the form has worked out really well, so a mark of 90 could well be generous. I have no problems with the booking of Zac Lloyd, who won the big sprint handicap at York last weekend.
6.10 Ascot: Mezcala
High drawn horses have won four of the last five runnings of this seven-furlong cavalry charge and playing strong percentages, I have only really considered horses drawn above 20 for my selection.
Mezcala has plenty going for him in stall 30 in that he is a hold-up performer who looks to be still improving judged by his two runs this season. He won the Spring Mile at Doncaster in very good style and ran really well when third at Newbury on his latest start.
I feel he showed there that he may be well suited by the drop to seven furlongs in a race like this might suit him very well. Mezcala travelled very strongly and hit the front just inside the final furlong but was headed close home. This very stiff seven-furlong test could be ideal.
