An eight-race card at Kempton will be shown live on Racing TV on Wednesday and Dave Nevison has three fancies.
I very rarely venture out of handicaps for my tips but with meetings under threat, options are limited and this selection looks a good thing.
Archie Watson’s two-year-olds have been in good form this season, and you can no longer back them blind on debut, which is a shame, as they are usually short enough in the market.
Pepper bay made a promising debut when second at Kempton in September and a good profit is made when Watson’s two-year-old’s are sent off favourite, which Pepper Bay is certain to be.
Roger Varian’s lightly-raced three-year-old makes obvious appeal against some pretty exposed rivals here.
He was comfortably beaten when second at Yarmouth, but it was still a good run and proved that a wind op had not had a negative effect, so it is reasonable to expect improvement now that we know the op worked.
He won over this course and distance last year when he beat some decent types and a mark of 89 is reasonable.
This one was backed off the boards last time out after a very eye-catching run over this trip on his previous start.
It was easy to see why punters piled in as he is a seriously well handicapped horse who has won in higher grades on turf, and on the all-weather.
However, it is now absolutely clear Garth Rockett is not a 6f horse - it was actually pretty clear beforehand - as he just does not have the speed for that trip and is a big horse who takes a little while to get going.
Seven furlongs seems to make all the difference and I expect him to demonstrate that it is his optimum trip here.
Sean Kirrane is an excellent booking and I have stated many times that the first place I look is top weights rated just a couple of pounds higher than the handicap limit of the grade.
He looks the day’s best bet.
