I am dipping my toe very gently into the jumps season with three bets at Exeter on Tuesday.
My approach is pretty much the same as on the Flat – I look out for class droppers, stable changers and good amateur and conditional jockeys.
Hopefully we will have a decent winter.
1.50 Exeter: Sienna Royale
This mare has been disappointing for Nigel Hawke but has arrived at the in-form Jeremy Scott yard off a lowly handicap mark of 90 and she also has a good 3lb claiming amateur in her back.
She has also looked pretty slow and now that Towcester has been closed for good, Exeter is the place for such horses.
Significantly, she put up her most promising performance here before heading to Uttoxeter, Lingfield and Taunton – tracks which do not provide the test it looks like she needs.
A stoutly bred National Hunt type, Sienna Royale could be ready to win.
3.00 Exeter: Jubilympics
Emma Lavelle has her horses running well (October and November are generally good months for the stable) and Jubilympics is another who should be well suited by stepping back up to three miles on only her second start for the yard.
She ran well on her stable debut when beaten just half-a-length at Warwick. She has gone up only 2lb for that effort and is still lower than when an excellent second at Sandown last year.
Jubilympics is another who could thrive this winter.
3.35 Exeter: Reikers Island
I really thought this horse was going to be something last season when he bolted up at Wincanton, but it didn’t happen at all.
He did well enough at Newbury, where a blunder late on might have cost him the race, but he had lost the plot by the time he took on strong company at Ascot and Aintree.
He is only six, though, and can come back. Even though he has 12st he is not giving that much weight away and he is down in grade and up against a few horses who have also disappointed. The Philip Hobbs stable is in good form.
