There’s a good quality midweek card over the jumps plus an attractive all-weather fixture on Thursday.
My selections over jumps earlier in the week are still running so hopefully my eye will have been honed for my bet at Carlisle before heading on to Chelmsford for a couple of punts.
12.50 Carlisle: Garry Clermont
This horse has never run in a chase under Rules and didn’t run in a handicap over hurdles so his trainer has set the assessor a tough task in giving him a mark for this competitive handicap chase.
Jonjo O’Neill often uses Carlisle as an introduction, or reintroduction, for his good steeplechasers and that this horse runs at the track I believe is representative of the regard in which he is held.
It is pretty much policy for trainers nowadays to use handicaps for their novices and I believe it is a good one as they jump against other accomplished fencers. That must be safer and engender good habits.
Given the stable’s form, I am assuming Garry Clermont is fit and the fact he won his only point-to-point augurs well for his future in this sphere.
6.30 Chelmsford: Sidereal
Beaten by a well-handicapped horse drawn in stall 2 here last time. This improving three-year-old has bagged that berth this time around and can use it to his advantage in another competitive handicap.
Sidereal is having only his seventh run and has improved with just about every outing. His prominent running style certainly is favoured by Chelmsford and is further advantaged here in that his main pace rivals are drawn very wide in stalls 12 and 14.
He has been left on a mark of 80, which looks generous, and Oisin Murphy keeps the ride.
7.30 Chelmsford: Lord Neidin
A tough choice between two three-year-olds at the bottom of the weights but Alan King’s runner looks the more certain stayer and is chosen over Karibana.
Lord Neidin gave me a huge scare in his battle with Hesslewood at Haydock recently and proved himself a thoroughly genuine miler in the process.
His win before that effort came over course and distance and is proving to be strong form. With a favourable draw and Martin Harley maintaining the partnership he looks to have a favourite’s chance off just 3lb higher than last time.Racing TV has designed three slick, breathable masks to help you tackle everyday tasks in a stylish manner!
