Our betting expert picked two winners from three bets last week and is aiming to go one better on the second day of The November Meeting at Cheltenham.
[(full)Watch Replay] () Kalondra wins smoothly at Cheltenham last season
Disappointed on his reappearance at Chepstow when a well backed favourite for a race he had won 12 months earlier, but the form of that race has worked out very well and I am prepared to forgive.
The Philip Hobbs yard is in much better form this season than it was for most of the last and Rock The Kasbah is 2lb lower than when a good second at Sandown on his final start last season. A reproduction of that effort is likely to be good enough to land this.
Kalondra did me proud as my RUK horse to follow two seasons ago but will do me a much bigger favour if he lands Saturday’s BetVictor Gold Cup.
This is a most genuine, consistent and progressive seven-year-old who has a decent turn of foot.
I believe this horse is poised to bridge the gap from handicaps and will go some way to demonstrating a mark of 148 is lenient.
Indeed, he would probably already be on a loftier mark had stood up last time out at Galway when just starting to make ground against the high-class Sub Lieutenant. A strong pace will suit well and that seems guaranteed.
His course win, when beating Coo Star Sivola, also looks very good form. He was giving 5lbs to a horse who now rated 150 on that occasion.
Is another Hobbs runner who, despite his consistent form figures, might well have underperformed or at ran below expectations overall last season.
He still ran well enough to have earned top weight in this competitive handicap and backing Hobbs’ top weights in Cheltenham handicap hurdles will have done punters no harm whatsoever in past ten years.
Westend Story was backed to short prices on just about every start last term. He was brought down at the second when odds-on once and came up against a Henderson blot on another, so his backers must have felt cursed.
They have a chance to back him at a decent price on Saturday and can get their reward for being loyal (I hope!)
