Dave Nevison's top tips for Saturday: Emmaus can show his class

A fantastic card at Haydock is among five Saturday afternoon meetings on Racing UK and I will be combining my three bets in an each-way treble as well as backing them individually.

1.50 Haydock: Mekong at a general 7-2

This horse is the first to come out of the Melrose, which I believe is always one of the best handicaps of the year for producing future winners.

His run in the Melrose, where he attempted almost the impossible in trying to make all, represented big improvement.

Also, he will be running on testing ground today which he showed suits earlier in the season. The smaller field will be more manageable and I believe Mekong is going to be a serious horse and that he can take this £100k prize en route to proving so.

2.25 Haydock: Emmaus at a general 3-1

I believe this is a Group class horse given the right circumstances and he gets them here for the first time since the spring.

More rain will see his price shorten up but his run on good to soft at Deauville was probably good enough to win this in any case.

Cheekpieces for the first time might well be a positive and Roger Varian is in form.

Regal Reality was a massive drifter before winning at Goodwood in what I feel might have been a slightly suspect contest formwise. He is a danger and I will find out if my judgement of his form is correct by how he moves in the market beforehand.

3.35 Haydock: Mam’selle at a general 7-1

Is another who is back on softer ground for the first time and to judge by previous efforts on such a surface is set to benefit enormously.

The plus point of running, not disgracefully, on fast ground this summer is that her mark has regressed favourably and she could easily look a Group horse in a handicap in this event.

She looked like a stayer last year and I believe her run over this trip on fast ground can be ignored and at 7-1 or bigger looks great value here.
