It has been a decent week and I haven’t found anything to put me off my fancies for the Triumph Hurdle and the Gold Cup in the past few days. Hopefully I can get the winner of the County Hurdle too and make it a memorable
Cheltenham Festival. Best of luck!
1.30 Cheltenham: Solo at 100-30 Solo created a big impression on his British debut
Solo looked professional despite his inexperience at Kempton where his jumping and relaxed way between the hurdles meant he won very impressively.
The opposition probably wasn’t much, but it was the Adonis Hurdle at Kempton which is a well-trodden path towards the Triumph Hurdle and a route his trainer Paul Nicholls likes to take with his good juveniles.
He is certainly more relaxed than Allmankind, and Goshen has been extremely well placed by Gary Moore on the Flat, as well as over jumps, but his style might just set things up for my selection.
I am still a little disappointed by her effort when she was well backed at Kempton over Christmas but perhaps she travelled a little too well. She also ended up in front too early only to lose interest and become a target for the Paul Nicholls-trained winner.
A fiercely-competitive race like the County Hurdle - which will be run at a furious pace - should enable her to settle better and give her jockey an opportunity to hold on to her longer.
Obviously her placed effort behind Epatante looks better than it did before Tuesday, and she looks a more-than-fair price at 25-1.
3.30 Cheltenham: Santini at a general 4-1 A bit like Champ, this horse has so far been short of public approval but generally gets the job done, albeit in gruelling fashion.
That was certainly the case at Sandown on his reappearance where he scraped home, but a subsequent wind op obviously worked as he impressed me in the Cotswold chase and his price for this race has been gradually contracting ever since.
Henderson is applying cheekpieces for the first time here and that move could prove to be decisive if it helps him focus on the charge up the hill.
Al Boum Photo will be a very tough horse to beat in his bid to land back-to-back Gold Cup victories, but my opinion is that only exceptional horses can do that, and this is Santini’s opportunity to prove himself the top stayer under his ideal conditions.
