Dave Nevison's top horse racing tips for Thursday

The action is modest on Thursday but will again be illuminated by title rivals Oisin Murphy and William Buick going head-to-head at Chelmsford.

I am gingerly dipping my toe in the jumping waters at Carlisle. Hopefully, there is a winner or two among the trio below, who will all be in action on Racing TV.

3.40 Carlisle: Strong Team

This horse’s form deteriorated for an extended period of time and it was perhaps surprising connections took so long to try him in headgear.

A falling mark and the application of a visor have certainly brought about a transformation and he has won two of his past three starts under similar conditions to those he will encounter on Thursday.

He got beat last time but runs off a mark of 89 – still 9lb lower than a rating he has won off in the past.

The prevailing fast ground clearly suits this son of Exceed And Excel and he has gone well for experienced conditional Oakley Brown.

8.00 Chelmsford: Montather

Is only 1lb higher than when he won here on his seasonal debut and has a good chance of scoring again over his optimum distance.

He disappointed at Doncaster after that win but ran well in a good race at York and had no chance from his draw in the Cambridgeshire last time.

He has a good draw here and could be in the perfect position just off the pace on the inside.

A strong run race over this trip may suit him ideally.

8.30 Chelmsford: Smart Connection

Has improved with each run for Alice Haynes and may well prove to be better than this grade in the near future.

A wind op and the application of cheekpieces certainly seem to have had a positive effect and he won with authority at Lingfield last time, having been well-backed.

It is difficult to see him not running a good race from a favourable draw with his regular rider on board.
